We've been gong to this lovely refurbished pub in central Bristol since it re-opened in 2011. It really is a hidden gem, tucked away in the St Jude's area but only a stone's throw from Cabot Circus. It's small, friendly and beautifully kept - as are the wonderful selection of real ales. The food has always been good, but it's now stepped up a level with the appointment of Mark, a very talented young chef. I have enjoyed the mussels in white wine (best I've ever tasted) and today my husband took our son-in-law. who is vegan, for lunch. Mark immediately whipped up a delicious homemade veggie burger. Husband had the salmon fishcakes on wilted spinach with chive sauce. The menu is imaginative and absolutely everything is home cooked. So next time you're shopping at Cabot Circus, take a break from the chain restaurants and pop into the Volunteer Tavern for a friendly welcome and excellent food.
