“Excellent.”
Reviewed 14 April 2014 via mobile

Went in its second week.

The deep fried gherkin and blue cheese sauce are a bizarre but brilliant combination, and worth going for to experience on their own!

The poppy coleslaw was crunchy, with a nice tang.

The chilli was ok, if a little hot and lacking in beans ( we chose the mixed ). A shame, as it is a chilli bar.

The venue is good; having been tastefully decorated. Though the area itself does detract in the late evening; its well worth the detour at any time of day.

“Excellent Chilli”
Reviewed 31 March 2014

Just a short hop from Stokes Croft, next to the Bus Station is this little gem of a place. The menu (obviously) is mainly chilli - beef, three bean or a mix of the two. All served with rice, guacamole, jalapenos and sour cream. The sides are pretty good, onion rings were nice and crispy. I tried a deep fried gherkin, loved the idea of it but found the batter didn't stick very well. Still delicious though. Some people had waffles for pud which looked excellent.

I had the beef chilli (no beans) as I know "proper" chilli shouldn't have beans so thought I would check this out. The chilli was soft and unctious, nice chunks of beef rather than mince. Good amount of heat, not in a blow-your-head-off way but it built up nicely to a general hum. My partner had half and half, the bean part of it was really good, looked like some black eyed peas and black beans in there which is more authentic and unusual for a chilli on these shores. She isn't good with spicy heat but they gave us some more sour cream (gratis) which cooled it down nicely for her.

It reminded me a touch of the Canteen in Stokes Croft. Minimalist stylings, laid back atmosphere and the kind of place you can eat simple decent food and just sit back and have a few drinks afterwards. Chilli so good I don't think I can look at the slop I make at home with tinned kidney beans and cheap mince the same way ever again.

“Top Chilli!”
Reviewed 18 March 2014

We went to Mathilda's last week for a work leaving meal and all loved it! The setting was really relaxed and the atmosphere was welcoming. The 50/50 chilli was delicious and nice and spicy - cooled down with the sour cream and homemade colslaw it hit the spot and we had plenty so great value for money! BBQ onion rings were also a hit. Shame we couldn't fit in any dessert but we will be back to try the waffles next time.
