Mercure Bristol Holland House Hotel & Spa
Ranked #25 of 39 Hotels in Bristol
Reviewed 13 September 2012

I stayed here for one night on business, and it's in a good location right by the river and a short walk from all the bars and restaurants Bristol has to offer.

I got a friendly and professional welcome (if not quite grammatically correct - "Welcome in the Mercure Bristol") and my room was pretty standard, with a big tv and mp3 connection. I was disappointed not to have a bath, but I gather none of the rooms have baths. I slept quite peacefully and although i didn't have breakfast it looked very nice in the restaurant, and the dinner menu looked very exquisite.

I booked this as it was the top rated hotel in my price range on here that had a pool, but the pool is smaller than it looks, and underground in a dingy low-lit room, and although it was a pleasant surprise to have well-equipped changing rooms, (with an avalanche shower!) it wasn't really the sort of pool that you could relax and enjoy. I was expecting a sauna and jacuzzi as part of it too, what with the hotel having the suffix 'and spa', but the spa bits were separate.

Nothing major against it, but nothing much to write about either. Oh.

.Thank you fro your feedback, I am happy that you enjoyed your stay but I feel that it did not go as far beyond your expectations as we would have preferred!
Hopefully next time you book you can experience a little more of what we have to offer, such as tasting our delicious menu in our Phoenix restaurant, rent a bike and cycle the city or have a relaxing massage in our spa? Of course we do appreciate with business trips that time is short; however we are here to make your stay as enjoyable in whatever time you have with us!

The lights in the pool are to try to stimulate a relaxing atmosphere while you swim!
If you were to book with us again in the future we shall certainly allocate a room with a bath for you.
Thank you once again for you comments
Kind regards

Zowie Osborne

Stayed here for one night. Initial impressions were favourable, once inside the 70's like concrete facade. The room was good and all else seemed ok. Then we encountered the staff......one of whom in particular seemed to have a dis like of customers and in delivering any level of customer service. It is clear the customer is always wrong as far this person is concerned - who was very confrontational and actually ruined what was a pleasent evening up until that point. Clearly taking the Fawlty Towers school of customer handling to its word. You would have thought that fully paid up customers in this establishment would be spoken to and handled in a certain way when being told the bar was closed for example, but at this venue you were treated as if you had emerged off the bottom of someones shoe and literally argued back to by staff who clearly have no idea on customer handling or any semblance of delivering any type of customer service. The hotel is obviously doing that well they obviously do not care about any additional revenue that could have come their way. No further hotels from this group will be booked again in my remit - totally unacceptable. Very Poor Service and as is always the case, the whole operation and delivery of the experience is let down by a couple of people who are seemingly not bothered about customers or revenue to the business they work for. Avoid.

Thank you for your feedback regarding your stay with us, I am of course most disappointed that your expectations of customer service were not met.

We were on a Travelzoo deal (which was a very good one in itself - so good we took it out again) and were very pleased with the upgraded room and the location. The facilities are a little limited and the hotel buiding is no architectural feature. The room was clean, relatively large and very comfortable. The spacious bar and reception areas are bright and welcoming and the food in the restaurant was of a high standard (I've had much, much worse in other hotels) and very good value at £15 for 2 courses and £18 for three. Breakfast was excellent. Prices in the bar are not cheap but nor were they unexpected. The staff were also helpful and welcoming in an efficient kind of way and I even borrowed a bike from them for the day. We enjoyed our stay very much.

Thank you very much for your feedback regarding your stay with us, I am very happy to see that see that you had an enjoyable stay! I am very pleased that the staff were attentive and efficient, they shall certainly be reading your lovely comments.
As for the building, well it used to be the Phoenix Insurance office building before it became a hotel back in 2007. The hotel from the outside may not be the most handsome building in the Bristol; however we certainly make up for that with the pleasant surprise of white marble floors upon entry into our reception are!
I do hope we can welcome you back to the hotel in the near future!
Thank you once again for your comments

Did not live up to what we were expecting it's ment to be a four star hotel but room was small with only a shower we were expecting a bath, tv kept cutting out and bed uncomfortable. We had also put our suitcase on top of the wardrOde and when we pulled it back down a French porn mag came down with it so god only knows when that was last cleaned. As for the rest of the facilities there was only a swimming pool no Jacuzzi or sauna :-( breakfast was ok but not great over all we would not be staying at this hotel again.

I stayed for one night on business - the hotel is clean and well located (about a 10 minute walk from Bristol TM station and 10 minutes into town), it has a decent gym, free Wi-Fi and a good breakfast.

Thank you for your review of our hotel - I am delighted that you enjoyed our stay and that our staff were helpful - a lovely comment for our staff bulletin board!
I do agree with you on Breakfast - it's rather yummy and a great way to start your day!
Car parking is an extra charge in most hotels you will notice and we are one of the cheapest.
Thank you once again for your feedback and we hope to see you again soon!
