“The 5 star food safety award is wrong”
Review of The Crown

The Crown
Ranked #589 of 1,624 Restaurants in Bristol
Price range: US$6 - US$15
Description: The Crown is in St Nicholas historic Market and it was built on the medieval Bristol Tolzey Court. This court had been a meeting place for Bristol's merchants and had jurisdiction over a wide range of cases involving damage claims or disputed debts. The Crown has occupied this site since 1741. Originally it was the vaulted cellars that formed the original trading area. These were initially known as The Trap, but subsequently became known as The Crown Tap Cellar. There remains a bar in the cellars of The Crown and the new owners have renamed it fittingly The Trap once more. The ground floor Crown as you find it now was extensively refurbished in 1991

“The 5 star food safety award is wrong”
Reviewed 24 March 2014

A group of us decided to have the nachos, garlic bread and wedges. We saw the waitress eating grated cheese out of a tub through the glass part of the kitchen door. Not a great start. After waiting over 30 minutes one of our group went to the bar to ask when the food would be arriving.

Then the chef (viewed through the glass again) just chucked the garlic bread from the oven onto the top of the cooker. But it was when we saw them then drop the tray of wedges all over the floor and proceed to pick them up and put in bowls we intervened! The chef said that they weren't for us! So that's ok then?

The waitress then said she was throwing them away. By putting them in serving bowls first?

When we asked for our money back the manager said that he had 30 quids worth of food now prepared. After much discussion we were offered a refund, but not until after a 20 minute negotiation.

If you want cheapish drink then fine, but do not eat the food.

“Apparently the customer is always wrong!”
Reviewed 10 February 2014

On Sunday, 9th February 2014, we went on a pre-arranged day trip to Bristol from Newton Abbot with some friends. Our party totalled 10 people. We visited a few excellent bars before going to The Crown, where we decided it was time for some lunch as most of us were pretty hungry. One ordered a steak baguette, the next was a chicken burger, then a tex mex sharing platter and last was a rump steak and nachos.

First to arrive was the steak and nachos. Eh? I thought they were ordered last? Quite a long time after came the tex mex, which was alright except the chicken was burnt to a crisp. When it became apparent that the original orders were not forthcoming, and everyone else had nearly finished their meals, our friends asked for their money back as we were moving on. We were informed that the chef was on his own, and was very busy. We responded that he was obviously not doing his tickets in order and that it wasn't good enough. The waitress became instantly defensive, saying that the food would be out "any second now", a promise which was repeated many times over the next five minutes of discourse. We also explained that we knew the situation as most of us are or have been in the hospitality and catering trade for many years. In the end our friends asked if she would just please give them their money back. Her reaction was quite extraordinary, as she threw up her hands and exclaimed, "Ok, you can have your money back, but you've been incredibly rude".

We were all rather taken aback by this, and it was a shame as it seemed like rather a nice pub, but sadly not one that we will return to.
