Description: Located in the heart of Cambridge, opposite Kings College Chapel, The Cambridge Chop House is a traditional British bar and restaurant that has been popular with locals and visitors from further afield since it opened in 2007. Split over two levels, the ground floor boasts views of Kings College Chapel while the basement is an intimate, atmospheric cellar split into four rooms. The menu offers British classics made from locally sourced ingredients and the two course set lunch and pre-theatre menu is excellent value for money. Popular dishes include Mutton Barnsley chops; whole sea bass with wholegrain mustard sauce; and daily changing sausages made on site. The hearty portions are best served with local ales straight from the cask or wine from an extensive list.

“Good meaty experience”
Reviewed 18 June 2014 credit card Amex Cardmember Review

We had very good sirloin steak for supper here, with excellent texture and reasonable flavour, served with enthusiasm. Also an extremely good pint of Milton 'Pegasus'.

It must be said the menu's mainly aimed at carnivores - also, you may like to see the cuts of meat shown round on wooden platters by your waitress before you choose, but it is a bit pretentious (and one wonders about the hygiene aspects of the waitress carrying slabs of raw beef around the eating area - where do germy drips go, for example? Does she wash her hands before carrying round your plate of salad? Anyway, small points perhaps).

Our impression is that things have generally improved here quite a lot over the past year or two - to be honest before that the food could be a bit ordinary, the service was hassled, and the beer (despite being served from barrels on the back of the bar) could be on the cloudy and insufficiently-settled side.

No complaints this time, though, and the same was true when we went earlier in the year. We shall be back again.

“Disappointing Sunday lunch”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

We are big fans of the Chop House and it's sister Tickell Arms. I have reviewed before and praised it. This review is specifically about the Sunday lunch. We had the traditional roast beef as a Fathers day treat which was not up to their usual standard. It arrived suspiciously quickly after ordering, stingy portion, vegetables over cooked, roast potatoes reheated (dry and flavourless). Friendly staff. Lovely beer. Go to the Chop House....but don't have the Sunday roast.

“Hoe an English restaurant should be”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

We booked to eat here before a concert at King's College - across the road. Everything was perfect, and we shall certainly eat here again.

The menu is short and relatively seasonal (I'm not sure where the haunch of venison comes from in June) and quite heavy on red meat, as the chop house name suggests. But there is a good and interesting choice for those preferring fish or veggie. Barnsley chop was huge and cooked pink (medium rare) as it should be. Veal faggots were well conceived and executed, in a very good bean and chorizo stew.

Portions are generous, but be sure to find out whether you need to order sides of potatoes or bread; the bean stew is not really a substitute for the (excellent) chips or mash.

Desserts include good, fresh, lighter items, such as elderflower jelly, and genuine fruit sorbets. A very welcome change from the ubiquitous death by chocolate in 57 varieties.

We didn't try the wine list - no need to do so when there was good English beer on tap at the right temperature - cellar cool: not warm and not chilled - and refreshing at around 4% alcohol.

At under £60 for two courses with beer and coffee, this was good value. Monday to Friday the lunch and pre-theatere menus offer a shorter list at very keen prices.

In a city with so many chain restaurants this independent (OK, a small chain) is most welcome.

“Very English Food !”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

Visited with my wife for an impromptu dinner. Sat downstairs in the cellar. It was busy but service was brisk and friendly. Quite a limited choice of starters and mains but all interesting and local. I had the grilled sardines followed by the Barnsley chop (both very good), whilst my wife had the braised beef cheek followed by the duck. All well cooked (veggies a bit sparse and a little over done) and good flavours. The other choices were steaks, and a meat pudding. Maybe not the food for mid summer, but if you are visiting England, then this will give you a taste of "traditional" English cooking without any frilly additions. Worth a visit.
