“The place to stay in Cambridge”
Reviewed 11 June 2011

We stayed here while travelling around the UK with the aim of seeing Cambridge and getting some quality rest before leaving the UK. This was the ideal place to do both of these.
The hotel has been put together with a great eye for detail. The mural in the foyer shows the view that can be got from the top of the building, and the staff that met us were very attentive and professsional. Our suite on the 6th floor came with a great 4 poster bed, a coffee machine, and nice little touches like the heated floor in the bathroom.
We have stayed in most of the hotels in Cambridge, but we will definitely be back here.

Room Tip: The rooms higher up have the best views.

My wife decided to take me to the Varsity as a suprise for my birthday , we left London around midday and just over an hour later we arrived at the hotel . The station was rather quaint but hectic. The cab driver told us to expect good things as the hotel was central you could walk everywhere. He had heard good reports.

The hotel is townhouse in style ,solarium and whirlpool next door . The receptionist on the front desk are all engaging , smiley and helpful.

We were recommended The Eagle pub for lunch , it was great , just good old fashioned no nonsense style food and ale. Jamies italian is also superb we went there for dinner , only downside be prepared to wait , we waited 45 mins but it was well worth it . All in all a wonderful break , the much talked about roof terrace was closed because of the weather however we did mange get to a sneaky look , a panorama of delight. Would I recomment the hotel and Cambridge ? Two thumbs up !!

I took my girlfriend for a romantic weekend away in Cambridge over the May bank holiday and a friend recommended we stay at The Varsity Hotel and Spa. We located the hotel among the charming winding streets and found parking very close to the hotel easily. Upon arrival we were greeted by lovely welcoming staff and shown to our room. The room was gorgeous, with a huge bathroom with freestanding bath and designer style decor.
The hotel has a rooftop bar which every guest should definately visit for the views over the Cambridge. You can take in the river winding round the old town and many of the colleges. On our visit the barman was really lovely and funny, with great service.
Over the weekend we wandered around the town, found so many lovely places to eat or get a coffee. We were lucky with the weather and went on a punting trip which was quite romantic and the guide had really funny interesting stories of the town.
In the evening we visited the Riverside Bar and Grill for dinner, which I believe is part of the hotel. We had a view over the river sitting on the upstairs balcony in a quite corner which for a clearly popular resturant was really nice. We both had salad starters, steak and chips and wine which came to about £80. The food was really good, we both live in Central London and eat out regularly but the food definately lived up to what we expected, both steaks being cooked to order.
I booked my girlfriend into the Spa as a suprise treat , and she had a package offered by the Spa of massage facial and massage. I returned to the rooftop to enjoy a long breakfast and the views. She came back raving about the treatments, and the spa offered the products she often uses.
Even though our trip was brief it was such an amazing weeked for the pair of us. It was a gorgeous, relaxed break away from our hectic schedules and I am so glad I booked this hotel. Even though the weekend was a suprise for my girlfriend she is insisting we book again to return soon in the summer. It is a great distance from London for us to escape and spend some quality time in luxury beautiful surroundings.

We visited the hotel after our friends recommended it on the super sunday break, the staff were friendly and welcoming from the moment we arrived. This hotel offers everything , location spot on , Spa and gym and a roof top garden with spectacular views. We liked the all inclusive no add on extras , the gym is big and wow the jacuzzi on the river ! Our massages were soothing . Thanks Mr Roberto we 'll definitely be back .

Room Tip: The roof garden is a must !!

The idea of a new hotel in Cambridge is a good one. Only, this one doesn't quite reach its potential. The location on the river and nearness to the colleges is a plus; the lack of service and inconsistencies are drawbacks. The rooms are "functional" but impractical ( no lights by the bed for reading ( this is Cambridge remember?) nor can one turn the overhead lights out from the bed. The rooms vary in size but the prices don't. I had a terrace whilst my niece , next door , had a dorm like room with half windows ( which did not open all the way...fire hazard) The bathrooms were poorly designed with a 3 inch ledge for all dopp kits etc., missing hooks behind the door and near the shower.
The front desk staff were more interested in chatting amongst themselves than actually dealing with the client in front of them. No one seemed to be in charge.

Nice hotel, central convenient modern clean hotel^

The Restaurant and Spa are both adjacent to the Hotel. next Door "outside "

On arrival we were not given the room booked as they had a private function booking of approx 80 guests. We were told the room we had was the same class as we booked. However only then to be given the prepared cards for spa access that had the original room number we had been allocated.

The Spa is nice but not great. The Steam room was all slimey along the edges and smelt. When we made the staff aware we are told it is just because of the milk oils used and is cleaned daily. However there was mould in the doorway as you step in and the smell tells a different story. Certainly not an asset to the business.

The restaurant was closed as the private party had taken it over and we were not even made aware of this at check in.
The roof terrace also was only available from 4pm to 6pm as the private party had its use from then onwards.

The room we were put in was overlooking the street and delivery entrance noisy throughout the night. Not what I would expect for the second most expensive in the Hotel.

This was booked as an Anniversary treat and was a complete disappointment.

Room Tip: Dont be given room 116 its extremely noicy

Just returned from a night with my husband for his birthday. Back to my home town from Essex. Stayed on the 5th floor, lovely views especially from the roof top bar which they opened especially for us!
Room and bed very comfortable.
Darren on reception was exceptionally helpful as there was a little mix up with the meal in the River Bar (we were there on the Sunday special) but he sorted it out promptly.
The food in the River Bar was beautiful simple but the best rib eye steak I have ever tasted.
We initially parked in Park Street but worked out with Darrens help that it would become a tad expensive! So we moved the car and the Varsity team put a ticket on our car the following morning.
The jaquzzi is lovely lying in it whilst looking at the river is fab-the funniest bit is watching the people walk past doing their hair etc in the mirror not realising that we could see them and not them us!
What I didnt realise though totally my fault that breakfast was not included in the deal saying that it was lovely very high quality bacon sausages etc used.
In summary I would definately stay there again.

Room Tip: Get a high room to make most of the views
