The Varsity Hotel & Spa
Ranked #1 of 36 Hotels in Cambridge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 4 December 2011

I went to The Varsity with my partner in November to catch up with some old friends and see the fireworks. We had heard about the Varsity hotel through friends, who had used the attached gym and spa. It is a small walk from Magdelene College and tucked away on the peaceful Thompson’s lane. On being shown up to our room we were astounded by the panoramic views of Cambridge. We’d decided to splash out and stay in a Penthouse Suite, which more than lived up to expectations. The room was huge, clean, spacious, modern, with a big terrace that was great for watching the sunset over Cambridge. The bathroom was also impressive, with a huge power shower with under floor heating and a separate free-standing bath looking out over the rooftops.
Little perks included illy coffee, two LCD televisions and the possibility to have a spa treatment without having to leave your room! Also the breakfast was so good. Having been often disappointed by mediocre buffets, this breakfast was top-quality. Even though there were copious amounts of bacon, sausages, scrambled eggs, mushrooms, cereals, pastries, bread and spreads, I decided to be difficult and ask for soft-boiled eggs with soldiers. This came speedily and to perfection.
We passed the manager in reception who seemed really friendly and told us about a special party at the hotel’s rooftop bar for Guy Fawkes. The views there were even better than from our room and you could see the fireworks on the common- definitely a memorable display! ;-)
We’re hoping to be invited back to Cambridge soon so we have an excuse to stay at the hotel again!

Very friendly and professional staffs. My partner and I stayed for 2 nights. Very nice indeed. Breakfast was great, we had it brought to our room both mornings. Nothing was too much trouble for the staffs. Only negitive point was, the double bed seemed a little smaller that the standard double; However very comfortable. We stayed in room 518, great view overlooking the park and city. We did't take advantage of the Spa and roof garden this time but sure will on our next visit. Already planning our next stay for the New Year.

Well done guys.

Arrived stressed from a long train journey to be greeted by very welcoming and friendly staff. I was escorted to my room 211 which was very spacious with a luxury bathroom-which i note had complimentary elemis spa products which are my favorite. I enjoyed a peaceful and uninterrupted nights sleep. Breakfast...was what you would expect...a buffet layout. Staff were friendly and kept the coffee topped up so i cannot complain. I managed to get into the gym on my second night after a very long day which was a pleasant surprise as the gym was very large with all the equipment you would need and more. All in all a very pleasant, non stressful and beautiful place to stay. It is also Ideal if you have business in the center of Cambridge.

Hotel would have delighted at half the price. Uninspiring modern office-block type building makes it feel more like an upmarket B&B than £200 a night establishment - tiny bleak reception area and only a small, out of the way lounge (where the absence of staff or drinks seem to create disquiet among guests). Fabulous roof terrace, not really an option In November. No parking. Town car park five minutes walk away cost us £29 for less than a day. Pleasant room overlooking service courtyard, small unflashy bathroom. Breakfast good. We wanted to eat in the restaurant but were told it was fully booked by a private party.

Friendly professional staff, lovely rooms and a great location in the centre of the city plus the spa and restaurant are both excellent. Highly recommended for both business and holiday.

My wife and I stayed at the Varsity for 1 night in mid-November and really enjoyed our stay. The location was perfect - really close to the river Cam, minutes from the shops, restaurants and bars. The staff were really friendly and helpful - we also made use of the Spa, which was of a high standard and nice & relaxing. We also had a few drinks at the hotels roof-top bar, with great views over the City. For dinner, we opted for the River Bar & Grill, which is part of the same complex as the hotel and spa - the dinner was great - had lovely food. This was also where the hotel breakfast was served - which was exceedingly good - with a wide selection and friendly staff. All in all, would definetly recommend the Varsity - it may well be slightly more pricey than some other hotels in the city, but we thought it was well worth it and would stay again.

Room Tip: Pay a little extra and get a higher spec room

We stayed a Saturday night in Cambridge to go to birthday dinner. in a college The dinner was black tie and on unpacking I found I'd forgottenthe actual tie. The hotel reception provided one in minutes. It's true the public spaces are not the best part of the hotel, but they are well kept, the staff are efficient and polite, the Spa next door is lovely, the Riverside Restaurant where you take breakfast is very well done, directly overlooking the river, and the artworks throughout the hotel are a nice touch. But what you really come here for are the rooms. We paid £260 for ours, yes, a lot, for a special evening, but it did not disappoint: floor to ceiling glass walls looking out aross Cambridge on two sides, a modern four-poster bed, a massive flat-screen TV and enertainment system, a very large seperate bathroom with a walk-in granite gloored shower. Fluffy robes, Aveda toilettries, 24-hour room service. It's a rare treat to find a hotel in the UK that understands what the much-misappropriated term "boutique" really means in terms of design, quality and character. We left feeling like we'd had a holiday, not a one-night stay.

Room Tip: We chose the superior fellows room. It was beautiful.
