“Beautiful Boutique City Centre Hotel”
Reviewed 27 March 2012

We have just spent two very rare nights without the kids at this excellent hotel.
As soon as we arrived we were taken aback by the amazing gold inverted dome sculpture at the front of the hotel, and were very pleased to see the wonderful artwork was continued inside with many modern pieces of work by local artists for sale.
Our Welcome was very warm and we were shown to our room, which was on the 5th floor, and has amazing panoramic views over the city and local medows. The room was stylish , large and very comfortable. It was wonderful to have the balcony and sit and watch the world go by with a cup of fresh illy coffee (standard fare on the tea tray).
We spent a lovely few hours in the spa. An amazingly relaxing luxury head, sholder and back massage was followed by a dip in the jaczzi, where you can watch the punts and public go by through one way glass (can be very amusing) and the steam room.
The central location of The Varsity is fantastic for exploring the city, which with its gothic architecture and winding cobbled lanes is a world away from most places, although do watch out for the bycyles they can come out of nowhere and whizz by you!
Dinner in the hotel restaurant, Riverbar Steakhouse and Grill, was great. you have to have a steak! the mixture of the exposed brickwork and chilled out music made the perfect ambiance for a romantic meal.
Breakfast is a treat to with continental and full english served alongside an a la carte menu. We ate of the a la carte and were not disappointed, the eggs benedict and kippers were very tasty as was the Highland scramble (smoked Salmon and scambled eggs.
I would definately reccommend this hotel to anyone, especially those looking to have a relaxing break away, and you must check out the roof bar, best views in the whole of the city!

My husband and i visited The Varsity Hotel stay at the beginning of March. From first impressions through to checking out, we had nothing but efficient, charming, but not over-familiar service from all of the staff. Our room was of an excellent standard and it was a pleasure to eat the quality food that was available in the restaurant.

We have just spent 3 nights here. This is a modern hotel in the centre of Cambridge, so excellent for all that the city has to offer. It has stylish light bedrooms a lovely breakfast room and spa facilities which we sampled a little and were very good. The breakfast was good, though service by some of the staff at breakfast was very slow, leaving tables stacked from the previous customers for way too long.
The reception staff were excellent, providing valuable advice and always a welcoming smile.

Had a long weekend in January at The Varsity, and enjoyed a much-needed chilled-out weekend. Very impressed with the tasteful way this old bonded warehouse has been converted into something really quite stunning. Perfectly placed as a base to see Cambridge, and a great bunch of staff to run it. Parking's not easy - but you shouldn't expect it to be right on the edge of the city, and the staff do all they can to mitigate this by keeping a parking tick live on your windscreen half a mile up the road so you don't have to worry about it.
The restaurant is good, and breakfast did the trick (though for the prices charged cooked to order should be the standard, not the hot buffet). Evening meal on the one night we tried it was a bit disappointing.....limited grill-type menu (OK it's name tells you it specialises in meat!) and the food seemed a bit fussy without the class to match. Pleanty of good eats within 5 minutes' walk, though, so absolutely no need to be bound to a meal here.
Room was great. The only drawback was a rather small bathroom. Bright and airy, though, and very quiet.
We'd go back here whenever we next find ourselves in Cambridge. Try and get yourself a deal when you book if you can as if not it's a bit pricey...possibly just a bit too much for what you get, but the staff will make up for pretty much anything.

The lovely riverside location amongst the Colleges is the perfect place to stay to enjoy this wonderful University City. Our bedroom, with an attractive wood floor, was beautifully furnished, spacious with the most comfortable super king bed and bedding. Our shower room was huge and well appointed. The breakfast was delicious as was the other meal we had in the River Bar Steakhouse and Grill. The shops are a few minutes walk away and the views stunning. Highly recommended and we hope to return before long.

had a lovely 2 night stay at the varsity hotel and spa with my husband. It is in the perfect location not far from the city centre, the colleges. We had a high room with views over the rooftops. The room was large, clean and perfect for our stay. The reception staff were more than helpful and we left our bags with them as we arrived early and they even ticketed our car on the monday morning leaving us to a lie in.

The only let down was the food quality in the restaurant. We had steak as part of the super sunday deal which was pretty tough and fatty in the middle and the sausages at breakfast were not great either. But overall we were happy with the stay.
