This hotel is wonderful and great value for money. Situated very close to local attractions, the staff were very attentive and service was quick. There is a lounge where they serve tea and coffee all day at no extra cost, it's these touches that make a very pleasant stay even better. Decor is divine and breakfast has a good selection.

As it rained for each day of our stay we made use of the spa facilities and no complaints here.

There are two things I would like to point out however:

1) make sure you check the cheapest rate on their website just before you arrive I booked 2 months in advance I checked the rate 1 week before and it had fallen by nearly £50.00 and then I checked again 3 days before and a smaller room was on offer for a further a£50.00 less- there were add on too for this rate late check out and drinks. We stayed in the smallest room rate, graduate, and this is ample the next room offers a larger bed.

2) like other people have commented you have walk out of the hotel to the spa and breakfast, though there was always someone with an umbrella to walk you round. When you read about the history of the hotel and spa you see why they haven't created a walk way through, I think that's fair enough.

These are not complaints just points to note.

I cannot wait to come back to Cambridge and I will definitely come back and stay at the varsity again.

A small boutique hotel in central Cambridge, great for sight seeing. We ate in their restaurant and although it was a bit of a disaster, sent back wine twice as not cold, then brought us the wrong colour, then forgot us completely, the Manager remedied it with a free bottle which was an excellent piece of customer service. Food was really nice but quite expensive for what it was. The hotel itself was nice enough, nice decor but service was a bit hit and miss, we were first given a room overlooking the bins which we asked to move from, we moved higher up which was better but the room not as nice. it would be good if they assigned rooms with views for the higher price and then you knew what you are paying for, as overall it was expensive for B and B for a room without the view.
Staff did not tell us about breakfast, where the spa was or the best and cheapest parking which was a shmae as we had to ask around.
The roof terrace had blankets but no heaters so was chilly, amazing view and teh Manager was great, although a very limited cocktail menu with only 4 choices, I think they are missing a trick here.
Overall it was a nice stay, but mostly due to the Company!

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the river rather than the bins, as noisy in teh morning. The room 112 had an incredible bathroom, nicest I have ever seen and if you are not bothered about the view ask for that one.

My partner and I booked the two night Easter weekend break at the reasonable price of £299. We only booked a graduate room and our expectations were not particulary high but we did expect something reasonable from the "top rated hotel" in Cambridge. I am afraid we were very disappointed. We arrived in our room and the view was the back of the Japanese restaurant, the rather loud extractor fans and the staff using power tools to dismantle furniture. We had requested a view as advised on this site and the hotel were not able to accommodate and although disappointing this is of course just a request and I totally understand this is not always possible but I felt the quality of our room was not value for money. The room was large but the bathroom very small.
We spoke with the receptionist and she kindly collected the duty manager. Both members of staff were very helpful and accommodating, the manager upgraded our room for the second night as the hotel was already full And we couldn't be moved. This was a generous gesture and the room was significantly better. Advice - if you book this hotel, only book the more expensive rooms, the others are less impressive. However I would love to say my disappointment ended here but not so..........some other pointers.
1- kings room on 6th floor has heating controlled by the room opposite, basically u have to have the temperature the guests staying in the penthouse want????? We nearly boiled alive, we were given a standing fan though????
2- the spa was a bit dissappointing vey small and very basic, the changing facilities are peeling paint, not luxurious, more like a council run changing facilities.

Good points and there are some, that rescued our stay.
1- the staff are very professional and pleasant
2- breakfast was very nice
3- parking tickets put on your car for you in the morning, is brilliant

All in all, not bad, but the be the top rated I would have expected more.........

Just returned from a 2 night stay at The Varsity Hotel and Spa in Cambridge and overall found it a wonderful hotel that delivered style and comfort with a central location from which to explore the sights. On arriving early we were told our room was ready, so checked in super quick (a definite plus!) and dropped our bags off before taking the car to their suggested car park. Whilst this is a short distance from the hotel, the Varsity take your keys and ensure the tickets are all kept up-to-date and paid for the duration of your stay. A nice extra given that they don't have their own car park.

The room we were given on the first floor was gorgeous; with a comfortable bed, lovely features and a fantastic bathroom. Having spent a great afternoon and evening in the town, we returned to the hotel (where they still have actual room keys as opposed to cards - a nice touch) and settled in for the night. Unfortunately our room was above the hotels own service yard and next to an alley way onto which numerous restaurants backed. Whilst this wasn't an issue in the evening, the next morning we were disrupted by the bin collection, people arriving for work and the noise of the service yard door opening below our room. Rather than suffer in silence, we spoke to reception and they couldn't have been more understanding - apologising and immediately offering us another room for the remainder of our stay.

Moving into our second room, we discovered an interior which surpassed that of the first (not to damn with faint praise...) and all the issues we'd had on the previous evening were negated.

We didn't eat at the hotel as there was such a vast choice of restaurants within walking distance and despite the problems on our first night we would not hesitate to stay here again.

Lovely stuff.

Room Tip: Try and 1st floor facing the alley way if you enjoy a lie-in.

Well.... We specifically upgraded and paid £185 for a superior king room. When we booked we asked for a bath and a view and can you imagine our dismay to get a view of the overflowing bins and all the staff from the next door restaurants outside having cigarettes!
We couldn't even open the curtains as there were windows directly opposite and all the people on their breaks could see in...

We complained and were told there were no other rooms and that was it!
On top of this the one other thing that made us choose this place was the fantastic promises of a rooftop bar which is definitely open from the end of March.... But it was closed!

Do not waste your money going here, there are far better places for this kind of money and with staff far less arrogant.
