“Amazing!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 July 2012

Our family spent 1 week in Cambridge and we loved the Varsity! The rooms were lovely, clean and bright, with luxurious bedding. The staff was attentive and very helpful planning out what sights to see each day. The always went above and beyond. My two daughters loved the spa and the hot tub. We had wonderful breakfasts each morning and the view of the river from the restaurant was lovely. It is a great find in an amazing location, very close to the colleges, great shopping and restaurants. We had stayed at another location in Cambridge before and this was so much more convenient and so much nicer! If you are traveling to Cambridge this is the place you should stay.

Room Tip: We stayed on the 6th floor - amazing views!

Came up for a last minute break to take advantage of a great deal on a Sunday with husband. Welcomed by a charming French chap who urged us to go to the roof terrace before dining which I`m glad we did. The most unbelievable views across the city in a great setting, sipping a cold glass of Prosecco - bliss. We were upgraded to a Super King room that was a really good size, and had everything you would want, Illy Coffee, complimentary water (rare nowadays) and was very tastefully decorated. The hotel has had a lot of thought put into it and as it is quite new is in very good nick. Went to the Steakhouse for dinner, overlooking the river, we had a lovely meal, I went for the lobster Mac and cheese which was wonderful, my husband went for the burger - he said was very tasty, I ate most of his potato wedges, much to his annoyance which were the best. Very pleasant staff, in a great atmosphere. Thank you all for making it such a pleasant stay.

Our room on the fourth floor had a good view above the rooftops which was especially lovely when the sun came streaming through the two glass doors one morning after two days of rain! I opened the doors and moved the nice sitting chairs in front of the view to really enjoy that warm, bright sunshine. The bed was super-comfortable and devoid of any icky bed coverings, just a clean white comforter and nice pillows.

In the bathroom there was a wonderful bathtub in the middle of the room. Another glass door in the bathroom opened up to allow fresh air in -- very nice while sitting in the tub.

Everyone was friendly and helpful - the front desk, the breakfast staff, the doorman - all of them. (To be honest, our first room was rather disappointing but they found us another room that made up for it. They were very responsive and not at all resentful when we asked if there was another room available.)

Easy walk to restaurants, the river, the colleges, Kettle's Yard, the Folk Museum, etc.

The roof terrace gives you a good view all around as the hotel is a couple floors taller than the surrounding buildings. It was especially nice to meet up there for drinks to decide where to eat for dinner.

The free wifi worked well throughout the entire building. We got a newspaper every morning and there was a kettle with good coffee and a french press (!), an assortment of teas, and a large bottle of water. Very civilized. The breakfast staff was very good - attentive and helpful and friendly. I kind of miss their smiling faces.

I would definitely stay there again!

Room Tip: We had a 4th floor, corner room in the front of the hotel which gives you a great view and morning s...

The hotel is in a great location, in the centre of Cambridge and right by the river cam. There is no parking so you have to park in the very tight public car park.
The hotel itself is very modern and nicely decorated but the rooms are hot with no air con so consider when you are goIng.
Fab bathroom with claw footed bath and enormous walk in shower with elemis products.
The roof terrace is great but was busy as anyone can go, expensive and staffed by teenagers who of course behave like teenagers.
The whole hotel and adjoining restaurant also seem to be staffed by teenagers which is disappointing for an expensive hotel where you expect better service.
Not sure I would stay again, especially if it is hot weather, it does look good though.

Stayed during the university term so maybe that's why the price was so high but we paid about £240 in spring 2011 (May not August actually) and for that we had nowhere to park (serious parking probs around there) and a room with no view at all. We could have been anywhere, in any generic box-like room. The whole place felt sterile & character free. Not what you want when staying in such charming town. I's day this place is quite incongruous with its environment. There's really nothing wrong with it - its clean and tidy but you expect something a bit special for a twin room at £240. Be careful how much you pay

Room Tip: Be careful how much you pay. ASK for a room with a view. They must have some.

Nice enough hotel with smart accomodation but I am afraid that this does not count for much if you cannot get a decent nights sleep. This was highlighted as an issue by other reviewers and the initial room that we were allocated overlooked a service area for a number of neighbouring restaurants / bars. The manager was very helpful in trying to offer us a different room but the best that he could offer, given that the hotel was full, was a room slightly offset to the service area.

I was hopeful that this would work out but was sadly disappointed and was kept awake through to c.1am by noise from the service yard as staff / customers made their boisterous farewells (on an otherwise quiet Tuesday night) and was rudely awoken at 7am by a succession of delivery trucks. The impact of sound-proofing from the double galzed windows was negligible.

Not worth the disturbed sleep I am afraid.

We chose the varsity as we wanted a central hotel with all the facilities. We were not disappointed with the location and the leisure offerings.

We turned up mid afternoon and went straight to the roof bar as our room was not ready , armed with a couple of newspapers and magazines.

An oasis of calmness the roof top bar is really something special. We were happy to spend the rest of the day up there.

Our room was basic not very big but more than adequate for two people , tidy and clean.

Breakfast had everything you could think of, the gym and spa were exceptional for a city centre hotel , body massages we had were very good value.

Overall we liked the fact it was peaceful yet central.

Room Tip: De stress with a massage well worth it
