The Varsity Hotel & Spa
Ranked #1 of 37 Hotels in Cambridge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 21 March 2014

We recently stayed in the The Varsity Hotel for one night while visiting Cambridge. I booked a standard room, although I let the staff know it was for a special occasion. Upon arrival we learned we've been upgraded to the Penthouse Suite, which is absolutely stunning and has almost 360 views of beautiful Cambridge. In the evening we enjoyed a lovely dinner in the hotel's restaurant The River Bar, and once again we got treated with care but without fuss. The food was well prepared as well. The following morning spent in the spa was divine. We were allowed late check out - since we wanted to enjoy the spa and come back to our room to change - which was also greatly appreciated. I have recommend the hotel to my work colleagues who are looking for a hotel and meeting place in Cambridge, and I'm sure they will be delighted as well. It's clear the management and staff really understand hospitality and service.

Stayed here for my moher's birthday back in December 2013. Lovely hotel, bit of a trek from the station but the receptionist was kind enough to inform me on booking that whilst walking is possible from the station a taxi would be better. Hotel is very close to the town centre however and very quick and easy to walk to.

Room was beautifully decorated and clean, good size as was the bathroom. Large balcony which overlooked Cambridge was a nice touch even if the weather didn't allow us to enjoy it. The bed was a rather small double which didn't give us the best night sleep unfortunately.

I had also booked some spa treatments for both of us, it came to just over £300 in total for two massages, a facial and a manicure so expectations were high. The massages and facial were good, I was a bit disappointed with the manicure which was performed at the massage table and was quite uncomfortable as I had to sit at an odd angle. The manicure only lasted about 7 days whereas other Jessica branded manicures I have had elsewhere last a good 2 weeks.

Breakfast was a short walk round the corner from the hotel which was fine and explained to us on check in. Food was delicious and being able to order items from the menu as well as have a buffet selection as part of the price was very nice. All in all we did have a really lovely experience but a few disappointments stopped me giving a 5 star review. I would recommend the hotel to others however and they would not put me off staying here again.

We stayed one night in a 5th floor room which had great views from the floor to ceiling windows.
The bed was very comfortable and the room was quiet. Shower room was huge.
The staff were all courteous and friendly and we were able to check in early which was great.
The hotel is literally a two minute walk from the town centre so is ideally situated if you are sightseeing or shopping.
The valet parking was very convenient. There's a charge, (c.£20 when we stayed) but it's well worth it, in my opinion.

Room Tip: Rooms on higher floors (5&6) are nicer, but, unsurprisingly, more expenive.

stayed for two night at the Varsity. Really liked the room on the 5th floor with extensive views over Cambridge. Service was excellent, very efficient and dealt with everything we required in a very nice way. Hotel is very centrally located and therefore everything within the City is at hand, we had dinner in the Riverside restaurant/bar one evening, steak was very nicely done and service unobtrusive but very accomodating. Table next to us also had steaks and commented that they were very well cooked. In general we really enjoyed the Varsity experience, have recommended to friends and would go back. We also used the roof terrace as the weather was kind! Great location but limited snacks and nibbles available to go with drinks, could be improved upon. One other slight caveat is that there is no on site parking which is a bit of a bind if you leave something in your car, that said the valet service provided worked seamlessly

Room Tip: We had 516, a corner room overlooking the city through panoramic windown on two side and with a balc...

We stayed here for 1 night on 11th March. I'd told the hotel it was our silver wedding anniversary and had booked a middle cost room, but asked them if they could possibly ensure we had one with a good view of Cambridge as it was a special occasion. To our delight, when we arrived we were told we'd been upgraded to the Penthouse Suite! This is a beautiful suite with a balcony and gorgeous views out over Cambridge. Considering it was March the weather was very kind to us and we were able to make use of the balcony.
The staff were courteous and helpful, the room was amazing and the food in the restaurant was good too. It's right in the centre of Cambridge, so everything is within easy walking distance. The valet parking is very useful too. We'd certainly go back here again and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

This hotel is frustrating - it has so many things about it that could make it one of the best but the quality of sleep seriously lets it down. There's loads good:

Location is brilliant for the city centre and touring. The ambience and decoration inside the hotel is great, as is the service offered by the employees. The spa next door is excellent - my wife enjoyed a facial massage which she says is the best she has ever had. The view out of the jacuzzi looks out onto the river, which is great relaxation (ignoring the passersby who look in at you!).

On the slightly negative, the continental buffet breakfast included in the rate us sparse, and the optional extra of eggs (Benedict, scrambled, omelet) is £6.50 pp. The restaurant and spa sit alongside the hotel and you need to leave the hotel and pop next door to access these. The parking is expensive at £19.50/night and access to the hotel is tricky with Cambridge's one way system.

However, the real (and only) big negative is the quality of the sleep. The rooms are tiny and I estimate that the bed that we had was 110cm. I spent the night either pushing my wife off her side of the bed, or falling off my side. The mattress was as hard as nails adding to the discomfort. Such a pity as i could quite easily be marking this as a 5.
