“Cool place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 April 2014

Very convenient location with marvellous views from bedroom (room 516 gets my vote)

Expensive but worthwhile

Peach Bellini's on the roof top terrace to die for

Cleaniness lacked slightly in those often forgotten places

would recommend everytime

Room Tip: must request floor 4 to 6 for views over Cambridge

The cheapest room is still an expensive £199 and definitely overpriced. The bed was a small double, the room tiny and certainly lacked the luxury 'boutique' feel advertised. Staff helpful and valet parking useful, although on leaving bags to wander round the city, we never received the promised call to tell us when the room was ready. Heaps of over attentive staff at breakfast which is not a major complaint but it was hard to finish a mouthful without the offer of more coffee or a plate being whisked away as soon as fork put down so couldn't quite relax.

The location and amenities are fantastic though. The roof top bar is lovely and the offer of a blanket on a cold day was most welcome. In addition, they had the best pillows I've ever had in a hotel, fresh coffee a decent hair dryer in the room.

If you can afford a better room the experience is probably much better, but if going for the cheaper option you will feel you got Ryanair when you thought you booked BA.

This boutique hotel was a real find. Most Cambridge visitor sites are within very easy walking distance. The roof terrace has stunning views over the city as do the extremely comfortable rooms with their large picture windows. The bathroom in our deluxe room was enormous with a large rain shower, and soft towels. The staff are charming and helpful, and the valet parking service is very efficient. We dined well in the steakhouse restaurant where again the staff were friendly and professional. Breakfast was good, with excellent coffee made by an Italian barista!

Room Tip: Room 511 with its floor to ceiling windows is wonderfully light with beautiful view over the rooftop...

The Varsity is a very quirky hotel, but a lovely and friendly place to stay. The rooms are well appointed, modern and nicely decorated. The spa is next door with Elemis treatments and the restaurant and breakfast room are next to the spa.

Someone has already mentioned room 513 is small, it is but not as bad as made out in my opinion. The views across the city are amazing, with a standard double bed, wardrobe and dressing table. The shower room has a lovely shower and is clean and modern. There are various teas and coffee with Illy ground coffee too. For a 1 or 2 night stay you don't need a large room, if you do book a suite!

The highlight for me were the staff, both on reception and at the door, all very attentive and quick check in and out. The doorman was wonderful, has lived in Cambridge all his life and knows the best routes to walk and take in the spectacular architecture. All in all worth the money but remember, this is Cambridge and they can charge more for the privilege of staying next to the river and near the Colleges.

The Varsity staff looked after from us from start to finish. Upon arrival we were fortunate enough to be upgraded to the Penthouse suite which was both amazing and quirky with great views from the floor to ceiling windows and private terrace. The location is perfect, near to the river and a minutes stroll from the the hustle and bustle of the city centre. Breakfast is served at the next door restaurant, whilst a cooked option is an extra charge the continental breakfast buffet was overflowing with great pastries, cereals etc. Overall I can highly recommend the Varsity and look forward to going back soon!

We stayed here for two nights. The hotel is right in the centre of the city but being on a side street is quiet. It is also next to the river. Our room was vey nice, a good size and nicely furnished. Breakfast was good, a decent choice of cold and cooked dishes. I recommend it.

Recently stayed for two nights at The Varsity Hotel in one of their superior rooms. From the moment we arrived the hotel staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Our room was superb, a large superior room. We dined in the Steak House next door one night which serves fantastic food (one of the best steaks I have ever had) and walked in to town the next night. The location of the hotel is great! Will definitely return!
