I've stayed in Cambridge hotels several times a year over several decades, both for business and for university alumni events. Usually they have been expensive and pretty poor (I could list the University Arms, Garden House Hotel, Felix and many others). Thankfully the Varsity offers a fantastic stay at reasonable rates.
The hotel owner seems almost omnipresent with a positive proprietorial eye over all the details.
My room had dual aspect floor-to-ceiling windows with beautiful views over the rooftops of Magdalene to the south and John's and King's chapels to the south. The room was very well appointed (Illy Coffee, new fluffy bathrobe, bedside apple tablet, huge walk-in shower) and a comfortable firm bed.
All the staff were young, helpful and friendly. The roof terrace must surely have the best views of any Cambridge hotel with 360 degree views over all the major central colleges and a decent cocktail mixer to boot. Breakfast is served on their restaurant just beneath the roof terrace with equally stunning views and high quality fare (really tasty sausages, eggs benedict, endless continental options too).
First rate. I'll be back.More
