“Friendly, comfortable and very well located”
Reviewed 27 November 2010

I spent one night here while visiting my son at University and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. I would certainly stay at the Varsity Hotel again when visiting in future. Although the reception area is quite cramped, this is more than overcome by the friendliness of the welcome. I arrived mid-morning on the day of my stay, without warning them in advance that I would be early, and I was of course much too early to expect access to my room but they made every effort to accelerate the cleaning from the night before so that I was given access by lunchtime - much appreciated. The rooms are modern stylish and comfortable and have lots of nice touches like fresh coffee and magazines. Do ask for one of the room on the top floors though in order to enjoy the views.
I didn't mind going next door for breakfast and the breakfast was good, though not quite as good as the hotel itself.
The location is superb for those wanting to visit the historic heart of Cambridge.

We had 2 nights in one of the "fellows" rooms. The room was quite small for what I was expecting from the photos and the other rooms on the floor. It was nicely laid out, good decor and bathroom was smartly decorated. A great shower, hot and powerful. Heating controls in the room were hard to see due to lighting in the room and size of the display, we had to ask the frontdesk to come and sort it out (which they did promptly and helpfully). Air con was noisy which was disappointing given how long the hotel had been open and kept my wife awake in the night. The bed was fairly comfortable but too hard for our tastes. Having stayed in a lot of hotels on business this was over priced for what it was but wasn't terrible. (attached restaurant was terrible, see different review)

We stayed at the Varsity Hotel & Spa for my husbands college reunion and after many disappointing visits to Cambridge we have finally found a decent hotel!

The hotel is in a superb location by the punts on Bridge Street and although it has no parking their is car park approx 3 -4 mins walk away. (The receptionists offer you a map when you check in!)

We were met by smiling, polite and courteous receptionists who clearly enjoyed their roles. Our room was amazing, fresh coffee (not the usual freeze dried stuff!), the wallpaper fabulous and our bathroom exquisite with a freestanding cast iron bath and Elemis products (quality indeed) .
The breakfast was a real treat with a good choice of cereals and cooked items so we were both well catered for. It was relaxed and informal with a wide range of newspapers .
The Spa next door is sublime and we were encouraged to use it even after we had checked out without charge.
The Varsity is a just a really nice friendly hotel with great facilities, highly recommended!

Positives:
* Great location just off Bridge Street & overlooking the river;
* Newly opened (12 weeks ago) - so new furniture, sheets etc. Though sound proofing
could have been better between the rooms.
*Decent-sized room, with good view, although I don't think the bed was a King, even thought the description was Fellows' king size room
* Nice and friendly staff - very approachable and helpful
* We liked the fact the price was all inclusive with breakfast, wifi etc, unlike other similar hotels.

Negatives:
* It didn't feel like the place was very tightly managed; the staff were very helpful, as stated above, but it seemed like everyone was doing their own thing
* Issues with room service and housekeeping - it took 3 phone calls & 2
visits by staff member to get a basic tea order right soon after we arrived. Someone did
come to turn the bed for the night but didn’t take the room service
tray away. Shampoo & conditioner were not replaced even though little
bottles were almost empty.
* Our major negative reaction was over the small, cramped reception area and the strange restaurant/breakfast arrangements, when guests have to
go outside and walk on the street to get into the restaurant area
(I am aware from a conversation that this is due to planning restrictions, but this issue is a major handicap I believe)
Overall, I am sure the teething problems will be addressed in time, but the lack of direct access to the breakfast area, and cramped reception, are not great given the fact the pricing is at the top-end for Cambridge

Very good hotel, conveniently located, friendly and helpful staff. Only criticism is that we were on the first floor and had a view of a restaurant kitchen... large windows meant it didn't feel very private... not ideal! Ask to stay on a higher floor.

Stayed here for my girlfriends birthday and booked the penthouse. She and I were both amazed with the views, room and location. It had the wow factor! The hotel is on the river Cam in the heart of the city, perfect for all the trendy bars and also very romantic as you have the punts on the doorstep! The hotel also has a lovely restaurant, spa and gym. Would recommend to anyone and can't wait to go back! The only place to stay in Cambridge!
