“Basic but friendly”
Reviewed 25 March 2013

Stayed here 23/3/13 and had the double room. The room is OK in terms of size and is equipped with tea and coffee, towels and you can borrow an ironing board, iron and hair dryer if required. Our room was directly above the pub, so quite noisy as it is open until at least mid-night, but just bring some earplugs if you want to sleep...or have a drink!

The bathroom and toilet is out in the corridor (not en suite) but this was OK for one night and didn't have to wait to use them. No noise from other guests when we stayed.

The room itself could do with a bit of a tidy up in terms of a lick of paint and a deep clean, but as it was cheap, so you get what you pay for. Bring some flip flops as it is lino flooring and you need to get between the room and the bathroom. The floors are clean but its cold on your toes! No toiletries were supplied for our stay but you can buy them from the bar if you don't bring them with you.

Staff were very friendly, helpful and polite, and nothing was too much trouble.

(Breakfast not included in our tariff.)

Good central location as the pub is about a 15 minute walk through Jesus Green to city centre.

Me and my girlfriend came up to Cambridge for a couple of nights looking for a lovely time in a hotel near the river, and thats exactly what we got.
We chanced upon The Portland Arms and were greeted with stunning customer service and we were even allowed to check out the room before deciding on staying.
What we got with the room was exactly what we were looking for, modern styling, clean bathrooms, comfortable beds, a television with freeview, fast internet connection via wi-fi and a nice pub downstairs to hang out in.
We even got to have the beer garden to ourselves for a drink with one of the barmen after closing.
If you are looking for great value for money, to be near the river, close to amenities in a nice hotel above a bar/music venue then this is the place for you.
We had a lovely time and recommend it highly.

Room Tip: We stayed in the twin room but were encouraged to push the beds together as we were a couple

The term 'spartan' could have been invented to describe the room I stayed in. I booked at short notice and theirs was the only accomodation in the city on a busy weekend - for which genuine thanks - but for £55 i got a tired, noisy room with no trimmings at all apart from a tv, and with the smell of ancient after shave clinging to every surface , including the bed linen. Come on Portland - a helping of new sheets and a duvet and a bedside lamp wouldn't cost the earth surely...

The pub itself is a likable place with the usual food & atmosphere.
We stayed for one night in one of the rooms. For the price it could not be beaten. It has everything you need but it is very basic as the price suggests. We were the for a wedding & so not in there long which I was glad for. The bed was quite old & noisy. The walls were thin enabling us to hear the other rooms tv. There are 3 rooms which share 1 bathroom, meaning you have to wait your turn. The bathroom itself has seen better days but was ok for showering the next day.
Overall I would recommend this place if you want a good drink. If you are only in Cambridge for a night & not going to be in there long then you would be a fool not to stay here as the price is the best. If you're here longer then you would have to have the patience of a saint, earplugs & not too fussed about poor surroundings. Nothing seriously wrong with it but there's nothing that good about it either!

This is a 'live music' venue and we were placed in a room directly above the room the band were playing in. The music, and consequently the vibration it created throughout the room, stopped at around 11.30pm - such a relief! Immediately outside our room was the door to the stairs leading to the beer garden. Every time someone came in or out the door slammed loudly, as did the shared bathroom door due to that door sticking. The room was tiny...although it did have tea-making facilities. The only way I can describe the mattress, is that it was like sleeping on a massive bag of chunky crisps - uncomfortable and noisy. We knew it was a shared bathroom, but didn't realise it was going to be a dank and dirty one - needless to say, we didn't shower in the morning. One thing we did appreciate was that the staff there let us park in the pubs driveway, saving us parking fees.

Room Tip: Lovely pub across road with rooms at same price!
