“Excellent venue”
Reviewed 8 May 2013

We booked the hotel for our daughters Christening and couldn't of been happier with our choice, everything from the moment we arrived was perfect, the room was stunning and the staff especially Dante & Sageeta were fantastic, we really couldn't of asked for anything more, even the sun was shining! We chose to serve our guests afternoon tea & the quality of food was everything you would expect from a 4* hotel, the scones in particular were delicious.

The hotel is located right in the middle of the town centre & although parking is limited we felt the charge was very reasonable compared to the multi storey car park just down the road, we had 80 guests attend and nobody had a problem parking either at the hotel or nearby.

Overall we would be more than happy to recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to book a friendly, warm venue for any type of event.

My wife and I stayed here over the recent Bank Holiday weekend. Having read the numerous critical reviews, needless to say, we approached Reception with more than a little trepidation. Thankfully, our first encounter proved to be smooth and efficient both in terms of organisation and a friendly, helpful attitude from the front of house staff! Perhaps our bedroom would let us down? No, our room was spotless and perfectly adequate in terms of its dimensions. Would the food and drink be a rip off? Again, no. The drinks were reasonably priced and the food in the restaurant was really good. The chef's obvious pride in the presentation of his work was clearly evident - it happened to be extremely tasty too. We took advantage of an excellent meal deal on our first night and such was the competitiveness of the hotel dining offer, we ate in the restaurant again on our second night because we felt it offered better value for money than many other bistro/restaurant style establishments around Cambridge. We also enjoyed relaxing in Parker's, the bar area, where once again it was reasonably priced and easy to keep an eye on the cost of our bar bill. We found the staff from management to cleaners invariably good humoured, pleasant and very helpful. Initially, we thought charging £16 per day for secure car parking was a bit steep to say the least, however, a few hours in Cambridge convinced us that the hotel once again offered a competitive rate. In summary, we had an extremely pleasant experience and could not fault the staff in any way. We have only awarded 4 stars because the hotel does need a refurbishment, although this did not detract from our overall enjoyment. This hotel will definitely not suit everyone, but if you are looking for faded charm and a building reeking of a great Victorian/Edwardian past then this could just be the place for you.

Room Tip: Try the Pre - Theatre meal offer.

Dear SteveChorley
Thank you so much for your truly flattering review following your recent stay with us here at the University Arms.

I am delighted that you found your stay to be a present one. We at the University Arms take great tremendous pride in the helpful and attentive attitude of our teams. I remain very pleased that this was reflected in your stay, from the encounters with our front of house to the clear pride our chefs take in the quality and presentation of their food. Thank you.

I am pleased that you found our food and drinks tariff competitive. I would also like to thank you for pointing out the discounted rates we offer to our residents when dinning in R17. This forms part of our "just to say thank you" initiative, our way of rewarding our guests.

SteveChorley, thank you once again for taking the time to write this review and I look forward to the opportunity of welcoming you back to the hotel very soon.

Have stayed in this hotel many times because of its great location and charm - However even the location did not make up for our less pleasant last stay. Our double room appeared to have been converted from a single room, with the double bed pushed up against the wall into a corner of the room under a deep sloping ceiling - which made getting up during the night difficult... firstly, to avoid a bump on the head from the low ceiling, I had to make make my way to the bottom of the bed or climb over my husband in order to find the nearest light switch. The bathroom was cold and in need of renovation. The only small window was jammed so could not be opened, generally it was a very unpleasant and claustrophobic room. We expressed this to the manager via email and received an unsatisfactory response. However, when we voiced our opinion on checking out the On Duty Manager was very apologetic and suggested we mention this experience when booking in future.... not sure if this will happen though.
On the positive side... the breakfast is great, as is the location, and generally the staff were very pleasant.

Dear Danusia10

Thank you for your review following your stay in October 2012. I am truly sorry that you where less than satisfied with your room. It is true that areas of the hotel require some refurbishment, and I am happy to report that plans for this are already well underway.

I appreciate the positive remarks relating to our breakfast offering, staff and our central location.

Kind regards

The hotel was clean and comfortable with friendly helpful and polite staff. Would definitely stay again although would probably ask for a room at the back as the rooms over looking the street suffer from having a nightclub directly opposite. Maybe this is just a problem at the weekend?

i usually stay at the University Arms most weeks on business. I choose the hotel because of its central location in Cambridge.

It is close to bars and restaurants, shops and the colleges, which are all within 5 mins walk.

Some of the rooms overlook a large green area, known as Parkers Piece and have great views.

The staff are very friendly, and there is nice bar which also serves food. The breakfasts are substantial with freshly cooked food to order.

Recently stayed here for 2 nights, firstly the hotel is in a great location for the City Centre and although looks modern from the outside is actually quite traditional inside.
Our room overlooked Parkers Place and was large and clean, with a nice bathroom and great shower, although could have done with redecorating, as could the rest of the hotel, which is looking tired. Housekeeping were quick to arrive when I asked for the bedding to be changed to anti-allergy and deliver an extra bathrobe (there should have been 2 in the room anyway) and the complimentary bottle of wine was a nice surprise.
Both nights there were functions in the room below, which unfortunately meant loud disco music till midnight both nights, slightly annoying but as I'm 6 months pregnant I can sleep through anything! It would have been nice to have been warned about this though and if I'd been a light sleeper or visiting with children I would have asked to move rooms.
Breakfast the first morning was great, service was excellent and the breakfast bar was fully stocked. The Sunday morning was a different story, although it didn't seem too much busier the staff were obviously not coping with the extra Sunday morning demand. There was no butter or milk on the table and asking twice for first bowls and then milk for cereal, I had to eventually abandon my cereal as my hot breakfast has arrived. The breakfast bar was not as well stocked as it had been the day before. The hot breakfast was equally enjoyable both days, so this is obviously more of a front of house issue rather than a kitchen issue.
The bar is lovely with great views over Parkers Place, although expensive.
Parking is far too expensive at £16 a night, I appreciate this is a city centre location, but £32 for a weekend is far too much, maybe a discount for residents or for multiple nights?
We would return if visiting Cambridge again, but hope the hotel spend a little on sprucing up the building and improving the 'little things'.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking Parkers Place, if on the first floor check if any functions are on as the...

Dear ehsun18,

Thank you for your kind review following your recent stay here at the University Arms. I am pleased you enjoyed our central location and you found our teams diligent and responsive. I am pleased you enjoyed our freshly prepared and cooked to order breakfast. I do note however, you feel that we where over stretched on Sunday morning.

I appreciate your kind comments relating to Parkers Bar and that you enjoyed our views over looking Parker Piece.

In relation to our parking tariffs, we regularly conduct market price research to ensure our pricing is in line with our competitors.
Thank you once again for your kind review and I look forward to the opportunity of welcoming you back to the University Arms very soon

The room was adequate, the staff polite and the public rooms impressive if a little shabby. The location covenient for city centre. BUT we had no sleep all night because of the noise from the Fountain Inn opposite. The thumping music went on till 3 am and shouting in the street till 4.15 am. We phoned reception 3 times and were told this is routine. We were offered another room higher up but at 3 am were disinclined to move. We phoned the police twice (101) but were told that unless a fight broke out they would do nothing. I thought of going downstairs to start one but it would have been 40 against one so thought better of it. The first floor room facing the street is unfit for purpose and yet they charge up to £180 per night for it.

Room Tip: Higher floors might be quieter but to be sure of a good night's sleep do not use this hotel.
