We stayed here on a Saturday night for a wedding.
The first thing I noticed when I walked into the Gonville was the new Best Western strapline 'Hotels with Personality'. This may well be generally true. I've stayed in Best Westerns before and have particularly fond memories of one in Patzcuaro, Mexico. However the Gonville was noticeable for having every last scrap of personality squeezed out of it. Frankly there was more personality in the Stansted Travel Lodge I stayed at a couple of months before,
The rather poky bedroom was bland & corporate from top to bottom. The only plus points were the excellent shower (counterbalanced by the lack of a bath) and the free wifi. Corridors were dingy and the public rooms had the same bland corporate feel. Just a few cheap reproductions of Cambridge scenes slapped on the walls & some wooden trellis covered with fake ivy in the conservatory area to liven things up. The charming Italian waiter dealing with front of house at breakfast seemed distinctly short-handed. The cooked breakfast was good but the coffee was indifferent & the croissants were among the greasiest I've ever tasted!More
