“"We found no fault!"”
Reviewed 4 July 2011

This was our second visit to the Gonville and although this was only an overnight stay, we were immediately at ease and completely satisfied with Reception and the quality of our room. Of course the hotel is ideally situated for access to Cambridge town centre and car parking was free - very important in a very busy town with expensive parking charges.

I was placed here by one of the exam boards and arrived with some trepidation, after reading the reviews below. The hotel turned out to be excellent. Reception was friendly and efficient. The room was wonderful: large and cool on a very hot afternoon. It overlooked Parker's Piece which was great, and there wasn't too much noise. The flat screen TV was very clear and the bathroom, although compact and bijou, was perfectly adequate. The decoration and cleanliness were impeccable. Breakfast was lovely; we had lunch during our meeting, and the meal was served promptly and tasted great. I had dinner on my own both nights. The usual business-hotel dining-room atmosphere, with individuals sitting at tables reading books between courses, was relieved by a very friendly waitress from Lithuania, who made sure I had everything I wanted and even produced a walking map from Google when I asked where a local pub was, where I planned to meet friends. An extremely helpful receptionist helped me connect my computer to the hotel's wi-fi. All in all, an excellent experience.

Room Tip: Front room has best views but maybe not aircon

We stayed here on a Saturday night for a wedding.
The first thing I noticed when I walked into the Gonville was the new Best Western strapline 'Hotels with Personality'. This may well be generally true. I've stayed in Best Westerns before and have particularly fond memories of one in Patzcuaro, Mexico. However the Gonville was noticeable for having every last scrap of personality squeezed out of it. Frankly there was more personality in the Stansted Travel Lodge I stayed at a couple of months before,
The rather poky bedroom was bland & corporate from top to bottom. The only plus points were the excellent shower (counterbalanced by the lack of a bath) and the free wifi. Corridors were dingy and the public rooms had the same bland corporate feel. Just a few cheap reproductions of Cambridge scenes slapped on the walls & some wooden trellis covered with fake ivy in the conservatory area to liven things up. The charming Italian waiter dealing with front of house at breakfast seemed distinctly short-handed. The cooked breakfast was good but the coffee was indifferent & the croissants were among the greasiest I've ever tasted!

We stayed at the Gonville at the end of our overseas trip through Europe & the UK and were very happy with it's proximity to Regent Street and the restaurant , shopping areas and train station. Also the hotel is opposite Parker Green( a large park) and in short walking distance to the National Express bus stop for the direct bus to Heathrow.(takes about 2hrs 45mins).
The rooms are spacious but a little tired . We were initially allocated room 121 which is to be avoided as it is near the large kitchen exhaust fan and the noise was very intrusive. The staff at the front desk were responsive and changed our room with no fuss - which we appreciated.
The hot breakfast is cooked based on your order & free wifi is available.
We would stay again.

The room was nice and spacious, well kept and clean. The service was OK, but the food was average.

The location is OK, about 10mins walk from the centre of Cambridge. Overall, it was probably a bit expensive for what it was.

Pleasant room, including a very comfortable bed, modern shower-room and sensible, well-lit desk space. Pleasant, helpful staff - a glitch with the desk lamp was dealt with immediately.
Breakfast pretty good (though if you were taking breakfast as a non-resident it could cost you over £12, so don't!), dinner in restaurant sound. BUT if you are thinking of lunching, avoid the so-called brasserie lunch in the atrium - pre-prepared burger and chips, breaded scampi (nearly all batter and crumbs and little sign of actual scampi) and chips, sandwich and chips, etc etc.... And if you want to eat on Sunday evening you will get the same menu again whether you like it or not (restaurant closed Sunday night).
Depressing to feel that a lovely city like Cambridge is being let down by this kind of thing in what is supposed to be one of its better hotels. You could probably eat better in a motorway service area; or you might eat the same kind of offering, but less expensively . Nice waitresses keep asking anxiously if everything is to your satisfaction - and to answer the question honestly is impossible.
Bar staff do try - but layout of bar makes it difficult for them to deliver orders promptly.
This hotel is in an excellent situation, and has many good points. If it got a grip and did things consistently well it could offer real value and be a winner - but there is some way to go.

Room Tip: Nice view in front but some traffic .

Having stayed in a variety of hotels in Cambridge - this one rates the best for service. On arrival the enthusiastic receptionist welcomed us warmly, and, on departure we received the same enthusiasm and courtesy. The night porter opened the locked door (after midnight) before we reached the threshold and welcomed us with a smile. The restaurant staff were efficient. The breakfast - cooked to order was delicious. On returning from a day trip the car park was full - having stopped to decide what to do next - the porter - who was watching out for such an incident - promptly came to our assistance and opened up another area of the car park for us to use. Such service in a hotel, enhances a guest's experience - a well deserved 5* for the staff of the Gonville.
