We stayed here during the recent Cambridge Folk Festival (excellent BTW) and found the hotel friendly and clean
Free wifi and parking were both much appreciated as was the quiet location
The room was clean and generous with a good shower - much needed after a day's bopping!
The only criticism is that ventilation in the room was a limited meaning a couple of warm nights when the UK was almost mediteranean - not a problem normally I imagine!
One thing to be aware off is that while most of the rooms have recently been refurbished, some have not. And work on these started on 1st August 2011 so might cause some disruption
We only used the room, eating elsewhere and so can't comment on the kitchen.

I stayed here for two nights, the evening before my wedding which was at the hotel and then the wedding night. The operations manager Christopher is extremely efficient at organising weddings and a lovely person to deal with. I was happy that the wedding would run efficiently in his capable hands and we had a great day. Several guests stayed at the hotel and everyone was happy with the service.

Room Tip: The rooms at the front are close to a busy road however the rooms have air con so with windows shut...

The hotel reception staff were very helpful, the room above average and worth staying here if only for the proximity to the City.

However, the meal we had on Friday evening rates as one of the worst we've had so go elsewhere for eating. Breakfasts were ok but the waiting staff seemed to find it difficult to smile!

Non refurb rooms and common areas looking rather tired but nonetheless clean, reasonably comfortable, free parking and most staff helpful (Had one male youngish receptionist who was very full of his own importance and who was NOT great when we left some clothing behind). Tried the B&B and the food for breakfast was ok too....nothing special but reasonable. Very close walk to the City Centre and pleasant, easily accessible location. Much better value than some of the supposedly "better" hotels like the Crowne Plaza which was a rip off with dirty rooms and poor facilties...stained carpets...need I say more? One feels really ripped off staying in Cambridge when there are university events happening - prices sky rocket for the "captive" parental audience.

Room Tip: Book a refurbished room if you can.

This was our second visit to the Gonville and although this was only an overnight stay, we were immediately at ease and completely satisfied with Reception and the quality of our room. Of course the hotel is ideally situated for access to Cambridge town centre and car parking was free - very important in a very busy town with expensive parking charges.

I was placed here by one of the exam boards and arrived with some trepidation, after reading the reviews below. The hotel turned out to be excellent. Reception was friendly and efficient. The room was wonderful: large and cool on a very hot afternoon. It overlooked Parker's Piece which was great, and there wasn't too much noise. The flat screen TV was very clear and the bathroom, although compact and bijou, was perfectly adequate. The decoration and cleanliness were impeccable. Breakfast was lovely; we had lunch during our meeting, and the meal was served promptly and tasted great. I had dinner on my own both nights. The usual business-hotel dining-room atmosphere, with individuals sitting at tables reading books between courses, was relieved by a very friendly waitress from Lithuania, who made sure I had everything I wanted and even produced a walking map from Google when I asked where a local pub was, where I planned to meet friends. An extremely helpful receptionist helped me connect my computer to the hotel's wi-fi. All in all, an excellent experience.

Room Tip: Front room has best views but maybe not aircon

We stayed here on a Saturday night for a wedding.
The first thing I noticed when I walked into the Gonville was the new Best Western strapline 'Hotels with Personality'. This may well be generally true. I've stayed in Best Westerns before and have particularly fond memories of one in Patzcuaro, Mexico. However the Gonville was noticeable for having every last scrap of personality squeezed out of it. Frankly there was more personality in the Stansted Travel Lodge I stayed at a couple of months before,
The rather poky bedroom was bland & corporate from top to bottom. The only plus points were the excellent shower (counterbalanced by the lack of a bath) and the free wifi. Corridors were dingy and the public rooms had the same bland corporate feel. Just a few cheap reproductions of Cambridge scenes slapped on the walls & some wooden trellis covered with fake ivy in the conservatory area to liven things up. The charming Italian waiter dealing with front of house at breakfast seemed distinctly short-handed. The cooked breakfast was good but the coffee was indifferent & the croissants were among the greasiest I've ever tasted!
