“Nice hotel for stay”
Reviewed 6 May 2012

We stayed overnightat the end of April12. We arrived at approx 6.00 in the everning. The receptionist was very friendly and helpful. We paid for dinner bed and breakfast. The room was comfortable. The eveening meal was ok,not the best we have ever had but it was fine. We had to catch a train at 645 the next morning and what was very good was the night porter brought a continental breakfast to ur room at 5.30,which was included in our package. Service and staff very freindly and would be happy to stay here again. In passing the position of the hotell is very good for sight seeing.

We got a 2 night B&B with Dinner deal from the Gonville and stayed the weekend of April 27th. The room was lovely, the beds comfy (if a little narrow - we had a twin) and the dinner on Friday night was delicious. We did find the rooms a little warm and although we had control of the air conditioning - we couldn't turn off the hot towl rail in the bathroom, which worked against our cooling efforts. All in all it was a great stay though and good value plus the location was great. Thanks guys.

We had an unfortunate experience at another hotel in Cambridge and booked here at short notice. Our room had been recently refurbished and was inmaculately clean. All the staff we spoke with were helpful and polite. Its also in a pretty quiet location. Recommended!

Room Tip: If you pick a room at the front there may be some noise from the road.

Like the majority of British hotels the Gonville is overpriced. Having booked at a non-returnable £125 per night we were surprised to be told that a room with shower, which we prefer, comes with neither wardrobe nor chest of drawers. Businessmen have no need of them apparently. We are not businessmen. Breakfast is a poor affair (ours was included but if it's not the bill is just south of £13 pp - frankly, a right royal rip-off). At 9.30 the croissants had run out. We were told it would take 15 mins to heat more. The bread was supermarket sliced. The cold meats were sparse, dry and unappetising. A scant quarter inch of marmalade was left in the jar.The coffee had run out. When the cannister was replenished the result was undrinkable. The cynical view would be that this is a deliberate tactic. The management then have the gall to offer cappuccino or espresso, presumably of a higher standard, at between 2 and 3 pounds a cup. The staff however were charming. They deserve better than to have to apologise for faults which are not theirs.

Good afternoon
Sorry to learn how let down you felt and clearly there are some issues here that need my attention .
In respect of your comment regarding the room contents I can only say that we did carryout extensive market research with the sample room we fitted out, prior to rolling it out over 40 of our rooms. I value your comments and will take these into account when next we review these rooms.
There is no excuse for items having run out at 9:30 am and I will be addressing this matter with my team. Please however except my apologise for our lapse on this occasssion.
In closing may I thank you for your kind commenst regarding the charming Staff.

Very dog friendly! They didn't blink an eye when we walked in with the labrador and, unlike other places which allow dogs, there was no long list of rules about pets, just a reasonable request not to take her into public areas. The hotel is not as close in to town as some of the other hotels but still a good location on the edge of Parker's Pieces. The free parking is worth its weight in gold as Cambridge is a nightmare to park in. Reasonably priced, comparable with the other premium hotels. Reception is friendly. Rooms are clean. The only thing is that it is a large, chain hotel and therefore rather character-free.

Good afternoon and thank you for your review.
I just thought that I would advise you know that the Hotel is owned and operated by 2 families who use the Best Western Brand for marketing and purchasing . It also gives you our valued customer the comfort of knowing that we do have to maintain good standards in order to belong . Indeed we have recently been upgraded to a BEST WESTERN PLUS Hotel.
I was pleased to read your kind comments and we all look forward to welcoming you back in the future

This was our first experience of the Gonville and it certainly won't be the last. All of the staff we encountered (management level to cleaning staff )were genuinely helpful and courteous . The room was spotlessly clean and well equipped. We did not have dinner in the hotel but will certainly do this on our next visit to Cambridge. Breakfast was plentiful and the ambience in the dining room was peaceful. All too often restaurants etc. are ruined by the volume and choice of music but this was not the case at the Gonville which, by the way, is far superior in every way to the tired looking De Vere hotel where we have previously stayed. The car park was free unlike the forementioned hotel where it now costs £16 per day!

Having been born and spent the first 20 years in Cambridge I had long anticipated the return to my hometown. I booked the Gonville as I knew the location was excellent and the service and staff of the hotel were not a disappointment. We stayed for 3 nights, had a great weekend and I would recommend this hotel to anyone. Indeed we hope to return.

Room Tip: There are rooms with bath only, when booking check you have a wet room or shower over bath.
