My husband and I recently visited Cambridge for a friends wedding. The Gonville is perfectly located for its central position and opposite a large green with attractive trees etc. We were overwhelmed by the warm welcome, exceptional service, a stylish contemporary and comfortable room with excellent wet room, air con, a large king size bed and a wonderful selection of luxurious pillows to choose from . We chose to have breakfast in our room which was deliviered prompty and beautifully presented.

Room Tip: Our room was on the 2nd floor at the end of a corridor and towards the back of the hotel so was incr...

I've stayed at the Gonville a number of times over the years, during which its formerly dingy guest rooms have now all, I think, been extensively modernized. The bathrooms are compact but very nicely equipped, and the rooms are now bright and modern with flat screen TVs, work desks, and quality bed linens. The rooms have air conditioning.

It doesn't bother me, but note that rooms at the front of the building can be rather noisy due to the busy street and nearby fire and police stations.

There's a full service restaurant, which I have never tried, and a bar. The Gonville has free WiFi for guests, although it can be a bit slow and balky, and has an unnecessarily obstructive logon process. The staff have been helpful and pleasant, especially Emma at the front desk. My room was always cleaned promptly.

The only negative comment is that at about $200/night the Gonville is quite pricey—I've paid less for a nice hotel in central London. However Cambridge is a very expensive place, and the Gonville does offer free parking.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front are noisy.

We chose the Gonville to base ourselves and our guests for our Wedding in May as the hotel is centrally located, offers free parking and most importantly were very flexible about what we had planned. All the hotel staff (Christopher in particular) could not have been more helpful during our stay and they provided a superb Bucks fizz and canapes welcome for guest arrivals on the Wedding morning. We also ate there the night before the wedding so can say that the meals are also great.

The hotel rooms have all recently been refurbished in a contemporary style and are comfortable and clean. The breakfast is great and was included in our room rate.

I am sure we will be back again whenever we are in Cambridge.

The hotel has a great location right on the edge of central Cambridge and also has free parking. The hotel is also nicely modernized.

However, one odd occurrence happened when we decided to walk down to the groud level (2 flights of stairs) rather than wait for the elevator. We took a flight of stairs near our room and when we emerged on the ground floor a staff member scolded us for using the wrong set of stairs (these stairs were not for guests). Since the stairs had no label indicating that we were not suppose to use them we thought it was a little rude of the staff to treat us like school children.

Additionally, before we arrived, our booking was incorrectly treated as a prepaid. We booked a AAA (American Automobile Association) rate which requires no prepayment. It only requires a credit card to guarantee late arrival. It is cancellable until 4 pm on the day of arrival. However, the hotel charged my credit card when it was booked almost 6 weeks prior to arrival. Phoned the hotel twice to try and get it corrected but to no avail. Luckily our plans to stay did not change so we did not have to attempt to get a refund.

A very nice hotel within a ten minute walk of Kings' College and the main street of
Cambridge. Being able to park there is invaluable as there is otherwise virtually no
place to park in the historic downtown area. Rooms are very comfortable having
been recently updated. The breakfast buffet is absolutely amazing - and is included
in the b-and-b rate. If you want to see Cambridge this is the place to stay.

Room Tip: On weekends ask for a more quiet room

The hotel is in a prime location for visiting the city centre. My husband and I enjoyed excellent service from all the staff who were very polite and obliging. We would definitely recommend this hotel for anyone wishing to visit Cambridge city centre.

Chose the Gonville for a one night stay on Saturday night whist attending a concert at the Corn Exchange, primarily because we needed somewhere within walking distance of the centre of Cambridge with free parking. And in this respect the Gonville certainly delivered.
It is ideally located opposite the Parkers Piece open space and a 10-15 minute walk will have you by the river.
On arrival the greeting was courteous, and the procedure was quick and helpful, especially as our room was already ready when we arrived at 11.30AM and we were allowed to check in.
It’s only two storeys, and is quite compact so most rooms are a short walk from the restaurant and reception.
We had requested a quiet room, which meant we were allocated one facing out back rather than the road, so the view wasn’t great, but it certainly fitted the bill of being quiet.
The room itself was quite small with a compact bathroom with walk in shower. But it had all the bits you would expect from a modern hotel room, with the possible exception of a wardrobe. There was a rail with some coat hangers, but that was it. That was actually not a problem for us on an overnight but I would be concerned if allocated this type of room layout for anything longer.
But the key selling point of the room, as others have mentioned, was the bed which was extremely comfortable.
Did not eat in the restaurant, but had breakfast in the conservatory which was very pleasant and the provided breakfast could not be faulted.
So in conclusion this was a very pleasant stay, but agree with others that is rates as a Very good rather than the top prize due to the price you have to pay for a Saturday night stay this close to the Cambridge centre.
