“Pleasant room, helpful staff.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 January 2012

We have stayed at this hotel twice. It is in an excellent location, the rooms are not huge but it is not a problem to us at all. Breakfasts are good with a wide choice of food and very attentive staff. There are only a few car parking spaces outside the hotelbut it is not that far to a car park. We have booked to go back again in June.

Room Tip: Quieter at the rear of the hotel if you sleep lightly.

The sprawled greek family of the hotel owners dominated the entry and reception area in a very unprofessional way. The room was old, small and outdated. Although the breakfast was generous, everything tasted like it was spoiled or old or in some way just wrong. In the end all I could really trust was the tea and toast. I was looking for solid value, but did not like this place at all. Cannot recommend.

No where near as bad as what other reviews have stated. We had two twin rooms and one family room between 7 of us. Yes, the rooms are quite small, but the hotel is an old building, so this should be expected. The hotel emailed me when I booked to advise that the hotel is being renovated and even though the rooms could probably do with a bit of renovation, the rooms are very clean, and we didn't see any wall paper hanging off the walls or paint work coming off (as other reviews had mentioned). The staff let us check into some of our rooms 2 hours early and we were able to leave our bags in reception the following day after checking out, so we could do a bit more exploring. The breakfast was an interesting experience. What I ate was lovely, just didn't fancy the cheese cake or spring rolls 1st thing in the morning!! The staff were very helpful. Would stay there again.

The rooms are extremely small, to the point that if one has 2 pieces of luggage one cannot get out of the door. The bathroom is so small that one can hardly stand. The rooms are very hot, even when outside it's fresh, and the windows don't open properly. The structure is so old that one can hear every single breathe of any hotel guest, not to mention steps and doors banging all night.
Breakfast is quite rich, not English though, which might be disappointing if visiting England as a tourist but very good for your arteries.
The staff are friendly, although when I asked if I could please have a quiet room they said that they cannot guarantee that and that's it. The waitress took my plate before I was finished, and when I told her very kindly that she could also leave it she said: what for?! --which I found rather unusual.
No free wifi.

Room Tip: I have heard that the deluxe room is livable.

I rate the room a good value for the price. But the breakfast is beyond expectations - everything you expect in an English Breakfast and more - from cold cuts to coffee cakes. Excellent location for visiting the Scott Polar Institute and Fitzwilliam museum.

Pay attention when they say "LOWER GROUND/BASEMENT FLOOR". Our son had an interview, so the first day we had a room for two persons. Small, but ok, at first floor. On the next day we needed an extra place, so we were forced to move to another room (all agreed during reservation). The problem is: they moved our luggages and when we entered in the room late in the afternoon there was a terrible smell of mildew ("muffa" in italian..). They were not able to arrange anything else, so we were forced to move to another hotel (the Best Western Gonville Hotel) quite more expensive, but it was the only chance to sleep!
In general, the hotel is expensive for the services offered (avoid to ask for "cappuccino"....the worst mixture we ever had...and we travel a lot)

I have stayed in many B&B's and hotels in Cambridge - visiting my daughter over the past three years at the university - but I have never stayed at such a poorly run hotel as this one. They say it is cheap but that doesn't excuse the state of the room. No one should have to stay in a room you couldn't even swing a dead rat - let alone a cat; a stuck window with a broken off missing pane; a room so narrow you cant open the door and get your case in or out; a wardrobe pinned against a strip light concealing most of it; a kettle that had a lead too short to plug into the nearest plug; an unhelpful and sour staff; a shared toilet with a broken flush leaving floating turds - two days running - even after reporting the loo broken; a breakfast with slabs of jellied scrambled eggs. I could go on. It makes you feel suicidal. Nothing like its charming website. Awful experience.
