“Quaint solution while in town”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 May 2012

We stayed at the Arundel hotel for graduation weekend.
Public areas, including restaurant, and breakfast rooms are very pleasant. If hotel is full, don't wait to be seated in the standard restaurant, take food out to their other rooms.
They have rooms it two buildings, while the main building is convenient and has the river view, I would recommend the "Coach House" or the back building, as the rooms there seem to be bigger and are much quieter, (the main building faces the main street).
Generally a pleasant experience.

Room Tip: rooms in coach house quieter

This hotel is wonderfully located, but lacks the polish that would place it on the 'tired and trusted favourites' list.

My single room was at the top of the stairs and the amount of traffic at night was substantial. Some kindly reveller returned to his room at 2.45am - how did I know the exact time? The soundproofing or lack of it, caused me to be wakened to the extent that i couldn't fall asleep again, as did the continuous opening and closing of the security door below in the earlier, but nevertheless antisocial hours.

I liked the pleasant, but oddly diffident staff, who displayed the imperturbable and deferential demeanour the English do so well. They are not aiming for perfection, but just a fair to middling competence. Little things need to be tidied up - they need more waiting staff at mealtimes and the food was uninspiring. Reception needs to be slicker - we did not get offered a morning paper and the room was inhospitably freezing as the heating is only on between certain evening hours. It is turned off at 10.30pm, so they are missing a trick or two.

Breakfast was lacklustre, but you can see plenty of comments in other reviews, so I will not carp. The conservatory was delightfully imbued with the genteel air one might find in a perfectly-located Cambridgeshire Victorian house, circa 1984 and it had a view of a pretty greenery behind. We lingered for some time there and never felt unwelcome.

All in all, you won't remember your stay, but it is an average Brit hotel with no huge minus points - the location making up for some of the more amateurish parts. That having been said, you may be guided to try another reasonably priced Cambridge hotel for your weekend away, if you are more organised than us and can book well in advance.

Room Tip: Avoid near the bottleneck at the top of the stairs

We stayed here for one night whilst visiting our son in Cambridge. I managed to get a room a week before we planned the visit, most of the hotels in the town centre were already full. We were given a superior room in the coach house at the rear of the hotel. The room was a little dated but quite a decent size and was clean and tidy on our arrival. The bath room was well stocked with shower gel and shampoo and plenty of towels. In the room there were tea making facilities with a reasonable choice of drinks. Car parking wasn’t a problem although the hotel was quite full.
The room was quiet despite a bit of water hammer when the loo was flushed. The beds were comfortable and we had a good night’s rest.
Breakfast in the morning was a continental one, included in the price of the room. A full English was available at just under an additional £8 pp. There was a good selection with the continental with the usual fruit, yoghurt, cereal, croissants, rolls and a cheese platter. Meals were served in the restaurant but you could retire to the conservatory with your coffee.
Other meals were available in the hotel at reasonable prices but we decided to eat out. Overall for the £125 it was a fair price.

Room Tip: Only stayed in the coach house, no views but quiet.

I enjoyed my stay at this hotel which has lovely views across the common and is near to the city and river etc for hiring punts. The hotel looks like it has been made from the purchasing of houses along the street to make one long hotel and the decor was tired and it seemed old fashioned having blankets, but it all kind of blended in with the atmosphere and was also probably one of Cambridges cheapest riverside hotels.

We stayed for a weekend and had a dingy room in the Coach House block. There were cobwebs on the ceiling and 40 watt bulbs in the very indequate table lamps. Haven't seen beds with blankets in hotels for years but they were here, looking slightly tired and worn. The buffet breakfast was just about edible but the toaster did not work properly and so toast was scorched on one side and not touched on the other. The queues to check out this morning were incredible with one poor young woman left to deal with about ten bills and other inquiries.

I had a lovely sized room with a massive bathroom, including a rather lovely bath. Everything was very clean and nice. The reception staff were very friendly. I had dinner in the hotel and I would really recommend it, the food was excellent as was the service. Breakfast was OK, small continental buffet, though you had to order hot food and it seemed to take an age to arrive, I only ordered poached eggs on toast! Great parking out the back of the hotel too, I'd stay again!
