We stayed at the Arundel having originally booked their sister, and much scruffier, Ashley hotel because of its location near Midsummer house restaurant. I suppose we were lucky to get a room, on the top floor, no lift, overlooking a very busy road and no air conditioning. We had lunch in the conservatory and felt very sorry for the two members of staff who did a stirling job in what was a very busy area, something was going on in the restaurant and of course it seemed that the management had made no allowances for this. Anyway you live and learn so we won't make the same mistake again. I've just read two other reviews which bear out mine, nice to see other people think the same.

Room Tip: What ever you do ask for a room at the back, unless its the middle of winter and you don't want...

Arrived in the middle of this heatwave to be given a top floor room in the 'coach house' - sauna would have been a better description - no air conditioning or even a fan. After complaining to 2 very indifferent reception staff the general manager relocated us to a room in the main hotel. Still no air conditioning but at least she gave us a fan (brownie points for customer service). The room was clean and had a nice view over the park across the road. There was a bit of traffic noise but considering how close the hotel is in real terms to the city centre it wasn't too bad. The free WiFi did NOT work at all in this room so we had to use our laptops in the reception area (remove brownie points). Breakfast was ok although the stale croissants were a bit of a let down and the legions of waiting staff, while very pleasant, couldn't organise to keep the buffet stocked with basics such as glasses (remove more brownie points). I then had the misfortune to move to a single room at the back of the hotel. Clearly management don't check on cleaning as this room had cobwebs hanging from the ceiling and an ensuite which had not been cleaned properly. To top things off I spend 2 nights listening to other 'guests' slamming doors morning, noon and night. So summing up if you want to stay near the city centre, get free parking for your stay, don't mind a basic continental breakfast or paying about 150 pounds per night for a double, dodgy WiFi, unbearable heat if the outside temperature gets over 25*, oh and listening to selfish people slamming doors when it is perfectly possible to close doors quietly then THIS is the hotel for you. If like me you are not keen on the last five points then look elsewhere!

Room Tip: Maybe top floor with no other guests around you would be best and bring a fan in summer.

We stayed here for one night in baking hot July. The hotel was chosen beacuse it was within walking distance of Midsummer House restaurant, where we were celebrating - and did not want to be thinking about cars or trains.

Lovely location - really close to town. All staff were very efficient and professional. Immaculately clean throughout. Our room was a lovely size with comfy beds, and a spotless bath/ shower. We were in the coach house. The room was extremely hot - even with the window open - but then there was a heatwave. Breakfast was great. Only criticism - the carpets were extremely jazzy almost hurt your eyes - but that's so minor. def recommend.

Cambridge is very difficult for hotels, particularly if you want parking. This hotel is an interlinked collection of large terraced houses which does produce some challenges. It is situated on the river next to a main road about 20 minutes walk from the centre. The walk to Cambridge centre and colleges is pleasant across Jesus Green and there is a conveniently sited footbridge for the river. However after dark I think the walk would make you feel uncomfortable. A taxi to the centre cost us £5. There is a large and seemingly secure free car park. The reception staff were efficient and demonstrated how to use the electronic pass. The bedroom was ground floor on the main road and clearly an old living room. It had character which is unusual now and was clean and comfortable with the wifi working well. The road was not noisy with the window closed but we had to keep it closed at night for security. It would be possible to feel at home in the room for a longer stay. The hotel is full of nooks and crannies and small staircases and one problem is that the corridors are very narrow. In fact 2 guests with luggage would not be able to pass each other! Indeed taking the luggage to your room in particularly tiresome. The cleaning staff did not appear friendly with no "good mornings". More importantly there are a number of housekeepers rooms scattered around and we were disturbed by staff in the one next to our room talking at 7.30 in the morning. Breakfast is held in an airy basement restaurant with very attractive china. However the content of the continental breakfast was poor with limited selection of breads and a self serving regime more akin to a budget hotel. This was a pity as it could easily be improved upon. In all I have given this hotel a 4 star rating as the good features outweigh the bad points and hotels in the centre of Cambridge are generally far more expensive with a quite sterile atmosphere.

Room Tip: Back rooms will be quiet but without the view over Jesus Green

Some positives - centrally located in the town of Cambridge with nice location on the River Cam. Charming old building, reasonably well renovated. Bedroom was adequate.

Small negatives - no air conditioning (typical in UK and weather was ok, so not an issue); toilet never flushed properly. And better not forget to turn in your key-card at check-out - they charge you pounds 3.50 for this piece of plastic.

Big negatives - wi-fi never worked and staff attitude about this problem was terrible. Details follow... Attempted repeatedly to access the advertised 'free wi-fi in all rooms'. Was never able to connect in my room despite repeated attempts with two different computers. Was finally able to connect sometimes by perching on a sofa in the reception area. But even that was slow and intermittent. My business colleague was never able to connect anywhere in the hotel and I noticed several other guests running their laptops in the common areas, presumably because their in-room wi-fi wasn't working either. Staff response to this problem was abysmal. First was "nothing we can do, IT support is only 9-5'. Then "we'll try to reset the router", which didn't help. Third response was "it's because you're in the Coach House, not the main building" (I'd asked to be moved to the main building, was told no rooms available, then a hour later observed a walk-in being offered a room in the main building!) I wasted hours of my time trying to connect, missed several key business emails, lost hours of work time. At check-out, I requested a courtesy discount because the advertised free wi-fi never worked. The reception staff's response was quite incredible: "since the wi-fi is free, we can't give you any discount". (On that logic, you'd have to wonder about the free breakfast as well.) When I told staff I would write a TripAdvisor review, they said "oh, no need to do that, you should write a letter to the manager".

Stayed in a single room for a week and found the hotel location convenient, the staff friendly and the food pretty good.

My room was a touch on the small side and I'm not a fan of carpet in the bathroom.

Overall decent value for money compared to other hotels in the area.

Room Tip: Try get a room on the ground floor. The rooms between floors are rather cumbersome when it comes to...

I have just returned from an overnight stay here with friends and we all liked it a lot. My single room was lovely, a good size with a comfy bed and a lovely shower room. The bedroom was tucked away on the ground floor and was very quiet and cool, given that the weather was scorching.

We spent most of our time sitting in the shady garden and the bar staff were very pleasant and accommodating. My friends wanted to smoke out there and there was no problem with getting an ashtray for them.

We had an evening meal in the hotel and it was delicious, including lovely deserts.

The continental breakfast was adequate and we didn't want to spend extra for a cooked breakfast, but the breakfast room was really nice and spacious.

The reception staff was friendly but we did feel it was unnecessary to have all the electric lights blaring on such a hot sunny day.

Room Tip: Good single room is 94
