Cambridge... great city. Lousy hotels...

We stayed two nights here in March 2010. £99 a night. The place could really use a refurb. Tired carpets, warn our stair tread and sheets with the odd stain.

It's a grand old building, but just hasn't been invested in for years. The staff were fine, but clearly uninspired. It had an air of 'can't be bothered to make an effort'.

And there was a fire alarm in the middle of the night - from the steam in the showers!

Avoid if you can find a better deal elsewhere. Cambridge - great city though.

We stayed here on Sat. The hotel is an ideal location with free hotel parking, it was about a 5 min walk into the start of the town. The hotel is nice decor a little dated but very clean. The room & bathroom was big & spacious, decor a little dated again but very clean and nice. Hotel staff were very friendly & courteous. The cooked breakfast was excellent and cooked to order and was within the room price.
We will def be staying here again.

We arrived at the hotel and checked in with no problems. We travelled with a party of around 25, all celebrating a family members birthday. At 5.30pm on Saturday we had to ask for the bar to be opened. Reception advised us to see if we could find a member of staff, when we did the member of staff did not seem impressed. 5 minutes later we heard this member of staff on the phone saying - 'why should we open the bar, it doesn't open until 6'. This did not make us feel very welcome. The bar had also closed the previous night at 11pm despite 25 guests wanting to stay and catch up.

The room was bizzare, almost antique!! When we returned after our family party we where greeted at the door at 1am by a sarcastic member of staff who said 'morning'. (Same grumpy member of staff) Again this made us feel very unwelcome.

Finally, we arrived for breakfast that was included in the room tariff. The waitress asked if we would like continental or full english. We choose full english. After we ordered, and it was too late, we noticed on the menu that full english was at an extra cost of 7.95. Had we been given the opportunity to choose from the menu we would have seen this and not ordered. Reception explained that it did say continental on the card that came with our room key. However, all the other members of our party who opted for full english where also surprised to find they had been charged on check out. I found this sly and underhanded and it is not made clear enough.

In summary i do not recommend this hotel as it is overpriced, 19th centuary with rude staff (i mean that one member in particular we where unfortunate enough to encounter)! Having worked in customer service i expect more.

OK hotel BUT in the bedroom there is a clock/radio between the beds which you cannot turn off and which emits quite a loud tick. This kept me and my daughter awake for some time. We mentioned this to reception and they said other people had mentioned this to them but there was nothing that could be done to turn it off. If you value your sleep do not go here. Arundel House, why don't you just get rid of these dated and annoying appliances?

The best phrase to sum up the Arundel House Hotel is “could do better”.
Reception staff are friendly and welcoming and at check in I thought this hotel was a “good find”. But that impression quickly wears off. My room was up two flights of narrow stairs – having to hold my case in front of me because of the width - and no lift so I'm not sure how you get on if you can't manage the stairs. In the middle of these stairs you have to negotiate a door with a security lock - not the easiest thing when carrying luggage!
My room could best be described as in the attic and having gone through the door I just found a bathroom and then realised that to get to the bedroom, there was yet another flight of stairs to negotiate with restricted headroom. The door just has a standard electronic lock with no dead-lock or bolt, so had to rely on the “do not disturb” notice.
The dressing table had to double up as a desk and just about fit my modestly sized laptop. Plugs were tucked away behind the curtains making it difficult to plug in appliances and have the curtains closed. The hotel’s advertised free WiFi service didn’t appear to make it to the heights of my room.
One positive was the “welcome tray” with good quality tea, coffee, drinking chocolate and biscuits. The other positive was plenty of good quality towels in the bathroom.
The bed had sheet, thin blanket and bedspread; the sheet and blanket proved inadequate in the night and I ended up putting the bedspread over the bed – why do some hotels refuse to adopt duvets?
The wardrobe hung clothes from back to front (rather that left to right) making the clothes hung at the back of the wardrobe difficult to access. There was a good sized safe in the wardrobe, a very useful touch amidst all the things which could have been done.
It didn’t take me long to realise why several other reports say that this hotel needs some money spending on it. The television has the basic five channels, two of which were such poor quality that they would have been difficult to watch. There didn’t appear to be any teletext. The bedside radio had clearly not worked for several decades!
Then I noticed a cracked window in the bedroom and another in the bathroom. Part of the bath surround was rotting, a problem which could have easily been solved with a fresh piece of wood and coat of paint. It just all felt very neglected although obviously had been very nice and could easily be made so again.
Cleanliness was superficial, for example a lot of dirt washed from underneath the plug when running the bath.
The bar and restaurant bore notices about not using mobiles and laptops on every table; does this hotel want to attract guests travelling on business? The positive was well kept beers. The meal could only be described as poor to very average, the menu is probably too long for the cook to do all the dishes justice. The soufflé starter was little more than a centimetre high! And the staff made it very clear when they clocked off and were loudly discussing issues with management before leaving.
Breakfast, as commented elsewhere, is a meagre continental affair. The bread was only fit for toasting and the fruit all appeared to come from tins. Something more adventurous with fresh fruit, breads and pastries ought to be possible. A cooked breakfast was a further £7.50.
A queue at checkout meant a delay of around 10 minutes; eventually as the queue had almost disappeared a second receptionist appeared.
All this is a real pity as I think the hotel is in an excellent spot. With a small capital investment and some modern management thinking, this could easily be so very much better.

I couldn't help thinking that if they spent less money on illuminating the trees at the front of the hotel and more money on upgrading the facilities in the rooms, they would have much happier residents. I also seemed to get arguably the worst room in the hotel; noisy, cramped, no flat screen TV, no freeview, no free WiFi. Come on hotel people, these are not luxury items - they should be provided as standard.
