“Remarkable & rewarding”
Reviewed 20 February 2014

This is a remarkable, possibly unique attraction which we found to be exceptionally rewarding.

On the day we visited the gallery was closed but the House was open and this is really the main attraction. It was the residence of Jim Ede, an ex-curator of the Tate Museum and his wife Helen and is made up of a number of cottages joined together. The Edes collected numerous artworks and objects which they displayed in the house. They gave the site to the University of Cambridge, stipulating that the works/objects should be left as arranged when the house was occupied, with the intention that students and the public enjoy the house and its contents in this way. The works seem to all be of the 20th century, some by well known British artists and many of which we found to be very interesting.

We were encouraged to sit on the chairs to view the works, which were arranged by the Edes with particular themes/ideas in mind, although each viewer will have his or her own impression.

The light in the house adds to its attraction as do the wooden floors.

The staff were knowledgeable, enthusiastic and even passionate.

“Kettle's Yard - don't visit Cambridge without seeing it”
Reviewed 28 January 2014

The gallery on the road is interesting, depending on the exhibit, but the real star is the house behind. Made up of several cottages which were joined together, the collection is fascinating and the house gives a good insight into the character of the former owners. Make sure that you check when it's open.

“Very Disappointed”
Reviewed 21 January 2014

The venue had been recommended to us by a friend of a friend. We went to look but cannot claim to be Art experts. Unfortunately the house was closed for work and only the gallery was open. As for the gallery, I can only say that it was not to my taste and I failed to appreciate the available exhibits. Perhaps it needs a more attuned appreciation.

I'm sorry to hear that you had a disappointing visit. We are carrying out vital repair work on the roof of the house at the moment. The house will reopen fully on 1 February 2014.

“Art Exhibition With Extras”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

Kettle Yard management involves the artists in the exhibtions and events for visitors. I have visited the Gallery on many occasions for a browse through the house to enjoy the art work or a sit in the library area. I also attended a Meetup event where a group of us spontaneously created an art work, and afterwards had a personal tour by the artists whose work was on exhibit. Thoroughly good experience any time I've been to Kettles Yard.
