A brilliant gallery. It is quite small but worth visiting the house which is part of the museum. A lovely way to spend a few hours.

This is a house which is, in fact a museum full of artworks, artefacts and furniture in an informal setting. It is deceptively spacious and very thoughtfully laid out without the usual labelling associated with a formal museum.
The concept originated when the original owner, Jim Ede, an ex- curator of the Tate Gallery and his wife opened his house to the public every afternoon. It now belongs to the university. Visitors may use the seats to relax and enjoy the items on display.
Unfortunately the adjacent gallery was in between exhibitions when I visited but the house alone was worth the trip.

Kettles Yard is an interesting gallery which was the residence of Jim Ede, an ex-curator of the Tate Museum and his wife Helen. He collected the works of 20th century art and artefacts which were displayed in the house with number of cottages attached; Kettles Yard was donated to Cambridge University so students can enjoy the house and the artefacts on condition that the house and its artefacts should remain unchanged. It is unique and quaint house, the volunteers are very helpful; the exhibits are very interesting and it is only open in the afternoons.

Having unsuccessfully tried to see The Backs, I followed the Main Road to Kettles Yard.
I found a small green, an old house, not Open, but with unkempt front garden.
At the rear was an Art Gallery, which looked open, but they were rehanging...or removing Art, and the place was full of ladders and the such like.
The tiny Chapel opposite was also locked up!
The Museum of Cambridge looked like it was Open, but there was no one in sight!
I left!

Thank you for your comments. I am very sorry that you seemed to visit when we were closed, we do have to close the gallery when we are installing new exhibitions, however the house and permanent collection remain open our usual hours, Tues-Sun 12-5pm. I hope you will be able to visit again when everything is open.

An amazing gallery and adjacent art filled house right in the centre of Cambridge. Just visited the Art and Life exhibition with works by Ben and Winifred Nicholson, Alfred Wallis and others. Don't n=miss the house, which is a fantastic place, former home of Jim Ede and his wife. Set aside a couple of hours to explore the house and works of art. There are all sorts of chairs and sofas in every room where you can sit to view the art and surroundings. And you can take photographs to inspire you later!
