“Lovely pub, lovely grub”
Reviewed 28 March 2012

Can't comment on the accommodation, as haven't stayed here, but have eaten and enjoyed several times. A nice local local pub with very good fresh food at very reasonable prices. Friendly staff too and nice atmosphere.

Our double room was nicely decorated and very clean ,but lacked even a sink. The four bedrooms at The Waterman share one toilet (it doesn’t have a sink attached) and one shower a sink. This meant it was impossible to fill the kettle in the room to make a drink if someone was using the shower.

Breakfast was a help yourself affair downstairs, not in the pub, which is next door. There was no coffee or tea unless you made it in your room (see above) and the area very cramped.

On the plus side you did not have to go through the pub once you had collected your key to access your room, but the front door did stick when you tried to close it.

Don't expect too much, but for the price you can't do much better. Small room, with TV and dressing table. Bed very comfortable, good room cleaning. Shared facilities were well kept. We chose this to give us a bed to sleep in between meals and drinks, and that is was.

I booked my room here at the very last minute (only a few hours before checking in) after a mix up with my reservation at the place I intended to stay. Given this, The Waterman was very reasonably priced, and good value. The room was small, but clean and neat. the furniture look new. The bed was comfortable. It is very conveniently situated, being only 10 minutes walk from parts of the city center and 15 minutes from the market square.

We had no problems with the noise from he pub below, although the road was quite loud (but then we did have the window open).

Breakfast was basic and self-service, but perfectly fine - minuture cereal boxes, toast and jam, fruit.

The only real issue is that there was only one toilet for up to 8 people, and it doesn't have a basin in it. But then thats what you expect at a B&B above a pub, you can't really complain for the price.

So all in all, the waterman was fine. Nothing special, but nothing wrong either. It wouldn't be my first choice in the future, but I wouldn't have a problem staying here again if other cheap options in the city were unavailable.

It is a newly opened and redecorated B&B above (a quiet) pub. It is has four rooms, all of which except for the twin one face a busy road. Their size differ and number 3 is the biggest one. I did enjoy my stay and I would recommend the place as it is difficult to find such a clean, modern and well-situated B&B in Cambridge.

LIKED:

- IKEA meets rustic Cambridge furniture
- beautiful and convenient location (10 min walk to city centre, right next to the park and river)
- lovely and very discreet staff
- price
- clean and modern bathroom
- my company:)

DISLIKED:

- it is situated 45 min walk from the station. But again, the station is far away from the centre and most of the hotels. Anyway, you can get a door to door bus.
- lack of breakfast room. Breakfast is basic (toast/jam/cereal/juice) and self-service. You will probably take it to your room.
- it is not for light sleepers! You are situated above a pub and a busy road plus there are no blinds in the windows.
- you have to share facilities with the other guests.
- TV did not work but hey, you are not in Cambridge to watch TV!

All in all it is a new place in Cambridge to stay in. Clean, modern and well-located.

The 4 rooms offered by the Waterman are all newly decorated and provide reasonably good value so far as staying close to the centre of Cambridge is concerned. The rooms are above the pub, but this was not a problem during our stay. The walk into Cambridge from the waterman is a delightful 15 minute walk along the river.

The most annoying thing about the waterman, apart from the lack of parking, was the small frosted window in the room without any curtain, through which the sun brightly shone at shortly after 5am. However, overall a pleasing stay.
