Holiday Inn Cambridge
Ranked #11 of 36 Hotels in Cambridge
Reviewed 13 September 2012

Stayed here for 4 nights in August. All the staff we encountered were very polite and helpful. Room was good, bed was very comfy, and we had a bath as well as a shower, all usual tea and coffee making etc. No complaints at all. We had room only so did not try the breakfast. We did eat at the hotel one evening. Service was good, food was good albeit a llittle pretentious. Had a few drinks in the bar area, all good.
Hotel is a great base to explore Cambridge. The reception staff drew us a map to show us where the bus stop was fairly close to the hotel and also gave us a timetable. We got a day rider into cambridge on a couple of days, just £3.70. Plenty of parking at the hotel. My only criticism is, as we arrived late into the evening, we drove past the entrance to the Holiday Inn as the signage at the main road entrance is not illuminated and therefore easy to miss so we drove around in circles!!

Good out of town hotel - friendly staff, ok restaurant, bar area could do with an overhaul. Very clean and tidy inside and out. However, the cost of the WiFi is totally over the top (£5 for an hour!), particularly when there is no 3G coverage in the hotel or its grounds.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your feedback on the Holiday Inn Cambridge following your recent stay.

In response to your comments on our Bar area unfortunately the re-flooring was being completed during your stay and so the bar was not being seen at its best. This has now been finished and is looking very smart.

In regards to our Wifi I send all feedback on this on to our Senior Management Team for their review.

Thank you once again and I hope we can welcome you back to the hotel very soon.

Kind regards

This was a good hotel and a lot cheaper than the city centre hotels - and with better bedrooms and facilities

I was quite interested to see that "Children eat free" - best for families to check the small print as it does not apply to eating in the bar even though the children's menu is the same as the restaurant. Also, the restaurant doesn't open until 6:30pm and for those of us with young children we all know that is far too late when you want them in bed by 7/7:30pm. The solution from reception was "eat in the bar then" - well that defeats the object of promoting the "children eat free" that you so openly promote throughout the hotel. However, it was easier to feed them outside of the hotel and then just use the hotel as a base. Portion sizes of the bar food are miniscule anyway and certainly not enough for grown men or any women we know for that matter. We overheard some people mentioning this and when you see that they serve the main courses in a tiny dessert bowl then you can't really blame them for commenting!!

However, don't let that detract from the hotel as;

the staff were very nice and very helpful
Breakfast was the best hotel breakfast we have had in a long time - lots to choose from, lovely friendly staff and nice hot food too.
the rooms were great - spotless, comfy beds and pillows.
the hotel bar is clean and welcoming
nice to see a comfy sofa in the rooms as well - far nicer to sit on that than a bed.
it is very easy to get into Cambridge - 10 min walk to the bus stop and little further to the guided bus stop.

This hotel beats their 4 star sister hotel in the centre in terms of facilities and rooms - the rooms here are cleaner, brighter and larger and I would rather stay here and pay less for a better room!

Room Tip: ground floor as the hotel does not have a lift - obviously better for those with lots of luggage!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your feedback following your recent stay at the Holiday Inn Cambridge.

In regards to your comments and Children eating free, this does apply to all area's of the hotel (including the Bar Menu) as long as one Adult orders food at the same time. Following your feedback I will review with staff on how we can improve on passing this information to our guests.

Our dishes at the hotel do vary in size and are dependent on the menu choice and this is so we can provide an all round choice of food to suit all guest preferences.

Once again thank you for your feedback and I hope we can welcome you back to the hotel.

Kind regards

I have just spend a night at the Holiday Inn Cambridge Hotel on business. The hotel isnt bad and I hope you find this review helpful.

Car Parking - the car park is large and parking is free - excellent & cant be faulted

Hotel Check-in - this was swift with no issues, again excellent & cant be faulted

Hotel Room - I had room 318, it was large & spacious and very clean. The bed was very comfy, however there were a couple of downsides to the room, the first was that the room was very cold and I could not get the room to warm up, the second issue was the windows had seen better days and were drafty which meant cold air and also noise was an issue.

WiFi - this isnt free and it isnt cheap either, why of why do hotels that charge over £100 per night insist on charging for WiFi, if the room was £40 - £50 a night I wouldnt have an issue but when your paying the rates I have just paid you come to expect WiFi to be included, also as a business traveller this is very important to me - it should be noted that the mobile phone reception in the hotel is awful.

Room Service - on reading the menu the food looks to be amazing, however in realisty the foor is poor / average at best. mBurnt potatoe wedges, soggy onion rings and a pizza that has probably come from an Iceland Box with no taste whatsoever.

Gym / Swimming Pool - these are excellent and I could not fault this aera.

All in, this is an over priced average hotel. Would I stop here again. . . . . . . probably not if truth be told.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your feedback on the Holiday Inn Cambridge and I am sorry your stay and overall experience was not to your expectation.

In regard to your comment on Room 318 although we believe that our rooms are of more than good standard we do appreciate that some reburbishment is due and this is scheduled for 2013. However in the meantime we will review the window and do any necessary maintanence to ensure both nose levels and tempretures are to brand standard.

I am sorry to learn of your disappointment in the quality of food you received and I can only suggest that if this were to happen again that you would speak to the Duty Manager and we would be happy to replace your meal. We do work to a Brand Standard and I hope this was a one off situation.

In response to your thoughts on free WiFi, we are aware that we are still a hotel chain that does not offer complimentary usage and all comments on this are fed back to the Senior Management Team who are currently reviewing this area.

I hope you will return to the hotel and I would be pleased to discuss any points in more detail with you to make your stay more enjoyable.

Kind regards

Stayed here for 2 nights for a weekend getaway, nice hotel but quite a way out of Cambridge itself and cost about £10 one way by Taxi to get to the centre. Reception staff were very welcoming and helpful, the Bar and Restaurant were ok but quite expensive as you would probably expect. Room was average nothing special but clean, no free wifi though. Pool and Gym area very nice and again clean. Breakfast was buffet style and was very good. A good weekend break hotel.

Stayed four nights on business.
Hotel is located about 10 minutes, by car/taxi, from the centre of Cambridge. Taxi fare is £8-£9.
Plenty of free parking at hotel.
Hotel is in good condition and very clean. Check in was quick and easy. Staff were friendly.Hotel has a swimming pool, gym and outdoor play area for kids. There is a bar and restaurant at the hotel. Breakfast was buffet style and included everything from continental to the full English.
I only have one negative thing to post about the hotel and that is that there is no free internet anywhere and that includes both the bar/lounge and business centre.

This is a very big hotel, seeming to be brick-built and timber clad set around several courtyards (aping a Cambridge College, perhaps but it can make for a noticeable walk to the room). One courtyard is the smoking area, another a children's playground. The hotel has a fair-sized pool and a gym with a score, maybe, of all the usual instruments of torture. We didn't eat or drink there, nor try the in-room service some available 24h. Reception was smart, the receptionists pleasant and helpful. Our room was a fair size and well furnished. It had a mildly deco feel with sliding large-panelled shutters instead of curtains all in much better taste than the budget chains and in faultless decorative state. The room was the right temperature and the air-con was silent. The bathroom was brightly lit. Everywhere was clean. The bed was comfortable. There was a fridge (empty, not a mini-bar) as well as the ubiquitous appliances. Large free car park just a few minutes well-signposted drive from a park&ride (@2.50 pp to town, return, free for wrinklies). This is my third overnight stay in Cambridge and this by far my favourite hotel (admittedly a little coloured by the exceptionally low room rate we got). I don't really understand why this is rated 3-star: it's the only time I've ever felt and hotel deserved more than it claimed.
