“Rugby tour”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 April 2013

The food was fantastic, there were 80 of us in total staying there on an Under 14's rugby tour. Excellent Breakfast and the roast chicken was enough to fill the 14 year old boys. The staff were a bit anxious with the boys and at times their decisions certainly not fair. But they did know there were 80 of us when we booked the rooms and accepted the deposit. The only negative was that. We would definitely think about staying in anther Holiday Inn again, for a family holiday or tour.
Were a little anxious as the fire door to outside was broken and could not be shut. We were the furthest from reception and anyone could have broken in. Kept the door locked at all times with the chain on

Room Tip: The staff were not used to teenagers and very regimented in their actions, worried that things would...

Only required an overnight stay and was very pleased with this hotel. Only a buffet meal available on Saturday night, but this was very good. Staff very friendly and efficient. Spa staff were much more pleasant than some we have used at so called upmarket hotels.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 April 2013

My husband and I stayed for one night at the Holiday Inn Cambridge Lakeview as a stopover on our drive on the A1 from Edinburgh to Kent. We have made this stop on a few occasions now and normally stay at the nearby Premier Inn which was fully booked at the time of booking, so we opted to stay in the Holiday Inn. Unfortunately the stay didn’t live up to our expectations.

Due to an accident on the A1 we arrived at the hotel a bit later than expected at around 5.30pm. There was a small queue to get checked in and the hotel was busy due to a wedding and Easter weekend. When we got to our room we were a bit disappointed to see a room that was a bit rough around the edges with fairly dated furnishings, as we expected a bit more having booked an Executive room. The package we booked was also meant to include bathrobes / slippers (for use in the pool area), free water and chocolate.

We quickly concluded that we had been allocated a standard room rather than an Executive room, and in fairness to the helpful woman manning a busy reception she actually quickly called our room to confirm that we had been allocated the wrong room. However, Executive rooms at the hotel were overbooked (presumably due to the wedding) and there were no other rooms available, so we had no option but to stay in the room we had been allocated. The receptionist immediately offered to provide us with the Executive package in the standard room, and on my request our room rate was reduced to the standard room rate. I thought this was a decent outcome but the staff were so stretched that the Executive package didn’t arrive until later in the evening, so we didn’t get a chance to use the robes / slippers in the pool as we had to leave early the next day. Although we didn’t get a chance to use it the pool area did look nice and there was a small playground area, making this hotel a good choice for families.

We did manage to squeeze in breakfast the next morning, and thought it was pretty good. Standard breakfast buffet with continental choices, hot food and a self service pancake making machine which I’m sure kids love. The breakfast staff were very welcoming chatting away to guests and ensured we were seated promptly, which was great as we were short on time.

Overall, we had a reasonable stay at this Holiday Inn but it could have been a good or a great stay had we been given the room type we booked in the first place. We got the impression that the hotel was much busier than normal which meant the staff were struggling to cope at times, and we thought the staff could have used their discretion a bit more as well (e.g. asking my husband to sign up to Holiday Inn / ICHG membership when he complained our Executive package hadn’t arrived and he had already said we were short of time, asking us to rate our experience of the hotel at check out when the staff knew we had been allocated wrong room, etc). This hotel is probably best suited to families looking to stay near Cambridge city centre with a car. For the purpose of a short stay in Cambridge we would opt to stay at the Premier Inn again which has a similar location and a better standard of room for the price.

Room Tip: Opt for an Executive room if you can (and as we tried to!) as the standard room we had was very date...

We stayed 2 nights on a leisure trip to Cambridge. We try to use Holiday Inns as members of their rewards scheme. The hotel is a motel style layout which means it's a rather straggly layout, but only on two floors. The location is well out of the city which means either driving in or catching the bus. The Cambridge / St.Ives busway stop is about a half mile walk away.
The hotel room was comfortable and quite spacious, with flat screen TV, internet access, desk, chairs and adequate bathroom. The room we had was showing some signs of wear and tear, but overall, no complaints.
Internet access charges were extortionate at £16 / day (not used!), but IHG hotels have announced they are offering it free to reward scheme members in future.
Breakfast buffet was good value with plenty of choice and an exceptionally friendly welcome.
There was a pool and small gym (not tried, but looked nice) and plenty of space in the lobby / bar area with comfortable seating.
All in all, a friendly welcome, a good night's sleep and great breakfast. What more do you need for a short stay?

Room Tip: Ask for a room near to reception to avoid long walks for meals & facilities

Attended as part of a conference held in The Academy - which is a very nice venue indeed. Bedroom OK food OK to good - did not bother with breakfast because of congestion there - but that did not bother me. Reception in and out was fine - no delays and nice staff. Funny layout to the hotel means that for some rooms you have to go outside the hotel and re-enter from reception. Nice view from the window of some horses! All in all ok, nothing special, bit expensive.

We enjoyed a very nice weekend at this hotel. Holiday Inns are a bit miss and hit, but this one definitely fell into the latter category. All the staff were friendly and helpful, the design of the hotel was modern, the food better than average and our family room a good size and well appointed. Kids are well catered for, with free dinner and breakfast, a small playground and a decent pool. Excellent gym. The Milton park and ride is close by or, if you are daft enough to drive into Cambridge, this is about 5 mins away. Factor in long queues for car parks and high prices. The hotel restaurant was okay and a Sunday night buffet great value for money. Service was occasionally reminiscent of Fawlty Towers, but always friendly.

Room Tip: Family rooms are slightly larger than others and include 2 double beds and a sofa bed.
