In life he may have been a trial to people hiring his horses but his legacy is rich, with a comic epitaph by Milton, the ironic choice and his gift of flowing water to Cambridge, known in his day more for pollution and disease than the calm academic air it has today. Whenever I'm near the conduit I like to pay my respects to this unlikely benefactor.

The Hobson Conduit provides a "running water" channel that keeps the gutters clean on a stretch of road in Cambridge. Hobson owned a Livery stable and is the reason for the saying Hobsons choice, as customers had to take the first available horse, not choose which they wanted. Interesting place.

Not only the inventor, nay the origin, of the phrase "Hobson's choice", but also a great benefactor of Cambridge. Lucky us. As a result, he funded the supply of fresh water to the centre of Cambridge, via a series of channels or conduits to the centre of the Market Square (originally), from Nine Wells, the springs closest to town. Truly a good deed.

This can be viewed when visiting the Fitzwilliam Museum. Not much to see but the history is interesting as it is where horses used to drink from Hobson's Stables and is related to the expression "Hobson's choice".
