This seemed to be one of the cheapest options for staying close to the town centre with a taxi fair of about £10. The Milton area where the hotel is located has a slightly oppressive feel to it but you don't stay here to explore this area. The layout of the hotel is a bit weird, a bit like a rabbit warren with lots of little corridors but the room itself was clean and attractive, the shower was hot and the bed was very comfortable. The restaurant looked nice and the included breakfast was very tasty with a good selection too. The bonus for us was that our dog was allowed to stay with us in the room! If your looking for a pet friendly hotel close-ish to Cambridge the Lovell Lodge is not a bad option, although don't expect too many frills.

I really enjoyed Lovell Lodge. Superb room, good Wifi, - good evening meal in the bar. The price for Wifi is so minimal - it's about £1 but on the website, it states that there is a charge - which is so minimal - it shouldn't put you off. My only complaints were that it has one of those fixed showers where you can't take the head off and all water squirts down from the ceiling!!! It's impossible to avoid getting your hair wet, ladies - so not really to my taste!! Also scrambled egg for breakfast was rock hard - no idea of cooking at breakfast - lots of foreign staff but very pleasant! The actual room and reception staff were excellent and good parking on the front and a bonus for me was that I could walk to work. I would definitely use this hotel again - good for Disabled too - no stairs!

The room we're staying in has an uneven floor, as in: has pockets that are a half inch to an inch lower than the rest of the floor.
The walls are FILTHY, there are grimy dust bunnies on a LOT of surfaces,
the bathroom light doesn't turn off all the way,
the shower backs up and is smaller than a phone booth.
And be sure you're not the first in the hotel in the morning to take a shower because you'll wait a solid 10 minutes for the hot water to arrive and by that time, you have to turn the water off so the drain can clear.
You either turn your hands blue with the water from the cold tap or scorch all that pesky skin and muscle off your hands with the hot tap.
It takes BOTH HANDS TO FLUSH THE TOILET. You gotta really want to flush that thing.
The walls are paper thin. And speaking of walls: there are holes in 'em.
We have to take turns to walk around in the room.
The light switch fell apart when my husband turned it off earlier today.
The bed and pillows can be summed up as hard and flat.
There is no place to sit with a laptop and work. This works out fine since the wifi is terrible. At one point, I lost the receipt for the wifi that had the password on it. Instead of telling me what it is, they wanted to charge me again.
The key to our room is actually a key, too. Haven't seen that for a while...
The other guests are really quite rough looking men. During the evening, only men (and there are many) are in the bar/lounge area and seem to be friends of the hotel staff.
The six days we've been here so far, our sheets have not been changed yet.
The breakfast is very limited and they limit you quite a bit on your portions. I can have a bowl of cereal OR some scrambled eggs.
The wait staff is also the staff who "cleans" the rooms.
There have been three people so far to man the reception desk. The one female is receptionist is very friendly and helpful. The two men are equally unfriendly, almost rude, and there's definitely a language barrier in that they were not entirely well versed with English.
As for the location: it IS close to the Business/Science Park and a bus station. It is NOT close to anything much else besides a Co-Operative Food and a Golden Hind Pub. It is NOT in walking distance to central Cambridge.
Again: there are often groups of rough looking men here ranging from three to a small crowd. As a female, I am not comfortable here and we will be leaving at the end of the week for a different hotel. All I'm looking for in the next one is clean, quiet, and safe.
Also, when we tell locals where we're staying, they laugh and poke fun. One even called it the Hovell Lodge. THE LOCALS KNOW THIS PLACE IS BAD!

Room Tip: Do NOT stay here.

A bad start, when we were pointed to the annexe (across the street) rather than shown to our room, set the tone. No information about the hotel was provided in the room, which was small, lacked storage and could have been fitted out by someone with very mediocre diy skills. There were food remnants and other rubbish in one of the desk drawers and although this was cleaned when we reported it to reception it didn't warrant an apology! There was also a grubby airing cupboard with a hot water cylinder which ensured that the room remained stuffy even with the radiator turned off and the window open. The shower was tiny and overflowed unless you kept your shower short. The breakfast was poor - basic ingredients not very well prepared or cooked - and the staff clearly not well trained in serving at table. Reception staff showed no interest in how we found the hotel. Overall I would suggest a fairly average two star B&B as a better bet.

Room Tip: choose a different hotel

Very shabby from outside, but looks acceptable inside. Rooms are small, but have all essential things. Sleep quality is good. Wi-fi internet is available for 1GBP per day. Breakfast is tasty, staff is friendly and caring. Dinner is available from 18:00 until 20:45. Food prices are affordable. Hotel is reachable by bus from Cambridge train station for 4 pounds, but taxi costs 10 pounds.
Rooms are warm, but not soundproof, so prepare to hear all sounds from all rooms near yours.

A most unwelcome welcome! No interaction upon arrival other than ' here are the keys and this is your room. Room was smelly, shower overflowed and so floor was dirty and sinking. Very expensive for very poor accommodation and welcome. Breakfast was fine and waitress very pleasant _ a welcome change! Would not recommend.
