Very friendly staff.Spotlessly clean modern hotel. We travelled as a family of 5 with 3 daughters. Our two older girls had their own twin room next to ours and we had the family room. Beds were comfortable, showers hot and powerful and a good size cubicle.Quiet hotel. Breakfast was ok ,everyone found something they liked to eat including ,fruit, muffins, cereal muesli, croissants, hot drinks, yoghurts and cooked breakfast . However we didn't like the fruit juice. We checked in earlier and returned to the hotel around midnight after our family get together had finished. We realised one daughter had not got her toothbrush at midnight and reception staff were happy to provide a complimentary one.

Check-in was quick, efficient and friendly. The room was a fairly standard Holiday Inn Express setup, though the TV was an old analogue 4:3 cathode ray unit. Beds were comfortable, if a bit narrow. Strangely, a choice pillows: one harder, one softer – and carefully labelled as such. Excellent light-obscuring curtains. Very little storage space for clothes, but then it is not aimed at holidaymakers planning extended stays.
The room had air-conditioning, which is unusual in the UK at this price range. Unfortunately, it didn’t work, but we didn’t find out until the middle of the night, so it was too late to do anything about it.
This Holiday Inn Express is right by Cambridge airport, but we experienced no intrusive noise.
The bar and restaurant area was spacious and clean. Breakfast included scrambled egg and sausages (no bacon) plus a wide variety of cereals, pastries, bread, cheeses, etc.
Unbeatable value for money, as we paid £49 for two, B&B.

After reading some of the other reports posted after I had booked, I arrived at the Holiday Inn expecting the worst, however it wasn't too bad. Yes , the breakfast was average, maybe offer bacon as well as sausage for a change ,the same could be said for the scrambled eggs, maybe boiled as an alternative? The pillows, I agree were hard, even the soft ones.
The staff were very helpful and friendly.
There were large parties there of foreign students, but they were no bother.
If you pay budget prices you can't you can't expect the Ritz!

This chain of hotels is medium priced and geared for short stay rather than holidays. And the hotels ( which are franchises) in my experience do the job well. And this one in Cambridge is no exception. I feel we had value for money. Friendly service, comfortable clean rooms and an adequate breakfast with a variety of choices. We will certainly return on our next business trip.

YOUTH HOSTEL - NO SLEEP

We booked in for 2 nights - not to a hotel but to a place overrun with near to a 100 Italian students - it was, in effect, a youth hostel.

There was nowhere to sit in the lounge area, throngs of students around the 'business' computer area, watching football & absolutely screaming when there was a score - the restaurant was taken over with the very large group and we could barely find a seat to even have a bowl of soup.

Worst of all - and it was very very very very bad - the noise never stopped.

At 2.45am we were still awake with group parties laughing & shouting in the room above us, smoking groups outside our window chatting & puffing away, and the whole of our corridor opening & letting slam door after door as they popped into each others' rooms for fun!!!!!

If you want sleep - basic, I know - run a mile.

We were sold a hotel room - but we got a youth hostel.
Misleading & unfair.

UNSUITABLE FOR DISABLED

I also read with interest the entry of 19 March 2011 by 'dajusa'.

I would like to reassure this guest that the lift is still faulty even now -  it is temperamental & was out of order 2 out of the 2 days we stayed.

My mother has recently had a full knee replacement & struggled with the stairs to her room. To top it off, as I helped her up the stairs one of the mornings, we very nearly got flattened by an out of control cleaning cart with flying toilet rolls to boot as 2 very red faced male staff attempted - rather unsuccessfully, with lots of shouted instructions to each other - to bounce this overloaded & very heavy cart down the stairs.

This would definitely not pass Health & Safety Laws - not for the hotel staff nor the guests, narrowly escaping a possible horrible accident.

So - is it just tough if you are disabled & the lift doesn't work?

That's yet another breach of what the hotel promises to deliver - 'a fully accessible hotel' - I don't think so!!

The note on the lift simply said 'OUT OF ORDER' - not even a 'Sorry'!!

So what of all the assurances in the 19/3/11 reply that this was a temporary and rare fault - well, is it really??

Next came the disabled parking.

We only stayed 2 nights but there were 3 cars always parked in different allocated disabled bays without the required Disabled Blue Badge.

At least 1 of the cars was the same staff car mentioned in the 19/03/11 review - the green car with the 02 registration.

This is just shameful & disgusting - there is NO excuse for this. The hotel appeared to do nothing about this as there were not even any notices on the cars & they would know exactly whose cars they belonged to, as we had to give in our car registration details upon arrival.

This is obviously not a concern of the hotel as again in the 19/3/11 review, this was also stated as an ongoing problem and the manager's reply chose not to address this at all. This clearly shows NO RESPECT for disabled people.

This hotel should be blacklisted for disabled guests and reported as such.

Shameful.

We definitely WON'T be back - not only to this Holiday Inn Express but to any other Holiday Inn whatsover.

Shocking .......

Dear Guest

Thank you for your comments regarding your recent stay with us at Holiday Inn Express Cambridge. We use all our guest comments in the consistent endeavour to improve the quality and standard of our product and service.

I’m disappointed to learn that you had an impression of hotel as youth hostel. We have some students staying with us since past few weeks and as per our guest comments in the previous reviews regarding the noise levels we have contacted the group leaders and the school headmasters in Italy. We have sought reassurance from them that they will provide us with all the support needed to ensure comfort of other guests is respected. I assure you that the team at the hotel is fully briefed on dealing with any issues swiftly. We are currently, taking every possible step to ensure less disruption to all our other guests.

With regards to your comments related to the lift, it is unfortunate that the lift was not operating in March due to a part failure, which had to be sourced from abroad. Once again during your stay recently the lift was non-operative due to another part breakdown. I would, like to highlight that our lift is regularly inspected by a competent engineer as a part of our planned maintenance procedures. I assure you that we take such issues seriously, the lift has been rectified and is back in operation.

At Holiday Inn Express, Cambridge comfort of our guests is at utmost importance, therefore in the instances like lift breakdown, as a normal procedure we will put down a notice with an apology, notifying customers of the breakdown and to contact reception if they need any assistance. I apologise if this was not followed on this occasion. With regards to your comments relating to car park I assure you that necessary actions will be taken to ensure that accessible parking spaces are not being used by unauthorised users.

With regards to your comments regarding the cart being brought down the stairs please be assured that I will investigate into the matter and take necessary actions to ensure such incidents do not occur in future.

I sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused to you during your stay. We hope this will not deter you from staying with us in future. The team along with me would like to thank you for your custom and look forward to welcoming you back.

Kind Regards
