“Ideal for a stay in a lovely City”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2008

We stayed here for two nights whilst attending the wedding of friends at Caius College. We found it to be a great little hotel in a very useful location with free and easily accesible parking. Getting into Cambridge itself is a pleasant walk either along the river or across Jesus Green and takes about 15 minutes meaning you can leave your car in the hotel car park and avoid the atrocious car parking fees in the city centre altogether. The hotel called me the night before our stay and requested that we check-in at the Arundel House Hotel which is (big) sister hotel to the Ashley due to staffing issues they were currently experiencing. This wasn't a problem as the hotels are only a few hundred yards apart.
Upon arriving at the Arundel House at about 1.15pm check-in was quick and easy and we were given directions to Ashley Hotel. The Ashley Hotel reception is not manned 24 hours but you can contact the Arundel House reception for any reason you would need to speak to reception which is what we had to do when we got to our room in the Ashley Hotel and it hadn't yet been cleaned and made up. I contacted Arundel House and they contacted someone at Ashely Hotel who came to see us whilst I was still on the phone to reception. Apologies were given and we were asked to sit in the Hotel Lounge for about half an hour whilst the room was prepared. We declined this as we were going straight out but left our luggage in the room which was ready when we returned back again at 10.30pm.
Breakfast both mornings was a pleasant experience with acceptably quick service and attentive staff. The cooked breakfast was up to scratch and better than many we have experienced in this country.
The room itself (we were in Room 4 on the first floor), whilst not large was big enough and the small but adequate en-suite was obviously a late addition. We got the feeling that the room had been fairly recently redecorated and both it and the en-suite were very clean.
Check-out was possible in Ashley House and again was quick and easy.
If we ever need to stay in Cambridge again we would stay here without hesitation. Many of the other wedding guests were staying at the Travel Lodge which was only marginally cheaper but there was no free parking and no breakfast included in the price plus the walk into the City was not as pleasurable.

I try and stay here every time I come to Cambridge. The rooms are clean, the staff are friendly, efficient and helpful and it is a short distance to the city centre by foot (10-15 minutes I find). An added bonus is the free car park so if I drive I can leave the car here for the entire time I'm in the city. Breakfast is either full english or continental, cooked by Donna and served in the basement dining room. The hotel does not serve evening meals - but given the large number of restaurants (and pubs + food) in Cambridge this is not a hardship - there is also the restaurant at the Arundel (the sister) Hotel 5 minutes along the road - this meal can be added to the Ashley room bill.

Found this great little hotel after checking out Tripadvisor and it certainly lived up to our expections. Everything was in place - no chasing round for things like at some places twice the price. The room was comfortable and the breakfast very good. I must say that the staff, particularly the chef cum receptionist cum chambermaid - sorry, I forgot to ask her name - was particularly helpful and friendly.

One of the best things was the situation with a lovely walk by the river into the city centre. Leave your car in their car park and stroll into town watching the punters. What's more, there is a brilliant real ale pub right outside the hotel, The Old Spring, serving good meals, so no hunting around to find the right place to finish the day.

Highly recommended

Stayed for one night in a double room. The room was large, well appointed and clean, the bed was very comfortable. Bathroom was tiny but the shower was good. The car park was right behind the hotel, very useful bearing in mind the scarcity of parking in Cambridge. The staff were English and friendly. The breakfast was cooked to order (they were happy to make poached eggs for us) but the coffee was instant. In the evening we had drinks at the sister hotel, the Arundel, which was close by and a little more upmarket although a bit dated decor-wise (cane furniture and swirly carpets). Overall a pleasant stay, probably the best thing is the location which is a walk across a large grassed area by the river to get into the centre of Cambridge - as near as you'll get for anywhere with free parking.

Small, 16 rooms. A step-child of the Arundel Houses Hotel. Stayed three nights. Despite facing a busy road, the room I had, number 1, was quiet. Large, by UK standards, as well. Ask for it. Tiny bathroom, however. Double bed was quite comfortable. Excellent breakfast included in the rate. The staff were friendly and helpful. CCTV security for much of the day and night, but the system seems adequate. Electronic locks on the doors. A frequent Stagecoach #2 bus stops a minute away heading into the city center, and stops just across the road on the return. A well stocked convenience store located just beyond the bus stop. Paid 75 pounds a night, with the breakfast, and that's a very good rate for Cambridge.

  • Liked — Price and comfort.
  • Disliked — Tiny bathroom

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Ashley Hotel in January 2008. It cost £75 for a Friday night stay including a hearty breakfast for us both (cereal, juice, tea, toast, bacon, sausage, eggs) and we thought that it was good value for money. The room was on the ground floor, but very quiet. It was a pretty decent size for Europe i.e. it had a double bed and enough space to walk around the bed. The bathroom was compact, but had a good sized shower cubicle. It was a decent power shower, there were no hot water problems, and there were lots of towels. Everything was very clean and tidy. The location was good - less than 15 minutes walk to the city centre. There was free parking and they let us leave our car there for free on the day of checkout so that we could finish sightseeing.

A couple of potentially helpful things that we found about Cambridge...

1. You can download a really good audio guide and map tour of the city for free to put on your mp3 player from Shape Walks and the Cambridge School of Architecture . We did the "Cambridge Past & Present Tour" and really enjoyed it.

http://www.stridedesign.net/shapewalks/audiowalkshome.aspx

2. We had a perfect lunch at the Cambridge Chop House opposite Kings College for only £11 each from their set menu. Go downstairs, the restaurant is beautifully presented, the staff were brilliant and the food was delicious!

My husband and I stayed at the Ashley hotel last month, and had a very lovely experience. We were in a large newly redecorated room (top floor, had to drag our luggage up there). Breakfast was the best we'd had in England. The staff was always cheerful and helpful - very nice folks. Staff is only on duty in the mornings and evenings, but it seems it is moving more towards becoming a regular hotel and less a B&B. We had to checkin at the Arundel down the road. Nicely located - a short pleasant walk across Jesus Green puts you a block from the main street. I would definitely stay there again.
