“Brand new, a bit out of town centre but good value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2013

A large group of my friends stayed at the The Travelodge, Newmarket Road, Cambridge from the 11th July to 14th July 2013. The hotel is brand new and as a result in immaculate condition. The rooms are spacious and the beds, pillows, bathrooms and fittings are excellent. My only gripe is the distance it is from the centre of Cambridge, a brisk walk still takes you 20 minutes, a taxi costs £6-£7. In all, the hotel is good value for money.

Newmarket Road Travelodge is brand new so splotlessly clean, room 323 modern and ideal. Car park underneath building free and parks about 40 cars again ideal. Bus stop right out Travelodge on main Newmarket Road fir buses into town...it's a good 25 min walk.
Downside i had a main road facing room and as Travelodge do nit ave air conditioning I opened the window for free air but the noise from the traffic from 0630 onward is horrendous!
Also no bath towel and no cups to make a drink in the morning.
Would stay again as half the price of Travelodge Central in Cambs but £8 taxi to / from town all adds to the price.

We stayed 2nd July for 1 night after going to a concert at Wembley Stadium, a cheap place to lay our heads to save us driving home after a 2 hour coach journey. Booked well in advance we paid a very good price for the area, and we were not disappointed.

Everything was very fresh and new looking on arrival, we didn't drive there but had no problems finding the place. The chap on reception was very chatty and helpful, checked in very quickly and the procedure for coming back into the building was also explained. Room was fine, basic just exactly what you would expect from a travelodge, although the decor was a lot nicer than some of the more dated hotels.

We were unsure whether to eat lunch there as the restaurant was completely empty so we decided to give it a miss and head straight for our lovely evening out. (we did look at the menu and prices/choice seemed reasonable) We then returned to the hotel in the wee small hours. Bar was still open, fortunately,(I think they are open 24/7) so we grabbed a soft drink and headed to bed. No problems with comfort or noise, our room faced the back of the building so may have been quieter than the front, but a good nights sleep was had so no complaints!

We decided to eat breakfast in the hotel for convenience, usual plentiful breakfast items to be found. Hot food was ok, but the sausages seemed to have been there a while (they were dry and hard!) but again nothing really to complain about. Only slight niggle, which is definately worth a mention, is that all of the cutlery looked dirty. Some of it may have been water marks, but the first spoon I picked up definately had food still on it so I was somewhat put off, however its no biggie, just attention to detail!

Check out was just as easy as check-in and again, the same chap that booked us in was very helpful and happy to book us a taxi, which arrived promtly. He also took on board our mention of the bedroom door sticking slightly, and explained that things were still 'settling in' which is only to be expected!

We would probably stay again, if ever the need arose.

Room Tip: quiter rooms are at the back of the building, as they are away from the main road.

It's a budget Travelodge hotel in a town setting, so start by managing your expectations accordingly - it's neither luxurious or charming, but it is cheap (when bearing mind that hotel prices in Cambridge are always high). My needs were simple, not too much noise and a basic but clean room - anything extra to be regarded as a bonus when staying in a Travelodge. To be honest, based on past experiences, I usually avoid this brand; but on this occasion I needed a cheap family room at very short notice, and this was the only option available. It had been open just over a week, and clearly was still getting into the swing of things with the landscaping still being finished off. However the staff were friendly, and the rooms very clean and quiet at night - despite a lot of weekend party groups staying in the hotel. Key criticism are inadequate parking which is not secure and the lack of free WiFi. In Travelodge terms, it does what it says on the side of the tin, if you want more than such a basic experience, go elsewhere and be prepared to pay a bit more.

Visited Cambridge for Addenbrooks Hospital appointment.i booked 2 rooms,1 disabled access, for one night.
The directions on the site send you all round Cambridge! When it was easier and quicker another way! Great start...The map also said it was 11 minutes from Addenbrooks,at 3 in the morning maybe!
Arrived couldnt find the entrance, not well signposted. Parked in the car park, local kids riding up and down on scooters/skateboards,shouting and swearing.
Tried to get in by pressing reception buzzer,in the end another customer let us in. When we got up to reception, one member of staff, and a queue of people.Check in was reasonably smooth, i was asked if i needed assistance should there be a fire (i am in a wheelchair) This was a good sign, never been asked that at any other hotel before.
After leaving our things in the room, we went down to the bar/cafe. Menu full of basic, frozen offerings. When we ordered we were told they had run out of fish the previous day (they have been open a week!) We waited over an hour! for 2 meals. There were a maximum of 10 tables occupied. Not busy. When it eventually came, only one arrived to be told 1 minute for the other,10 minutes later still not there! An hour and 20 minutes for 2 frozen meals?? Are you kidding? And when the pie arrived ,it had obviously been microwaved,on a tiny plate with 8 chips!
When we spoke to the young man on reception it turned out for such a big Travelodge there were 3 members of staff on!No management. 2 girls in the kitchen. No kitchen staff to be seen. The same girls were waiting tables as well as cooking. Then one went off to make beds up! so no housekeeping staff either! The lad on reception/Bar duty, Lee, was trying his hardest to help, but the 2 girls were less so,one even quite blunt.
Diabolical for a newly opened hotel. Not teething problems. Poor management, either from manager or above for not allowing enough staff.
As previous reviewer, doors were slamming the whole time we were there, all through the night, it drove you mad. Also very loud customers running up and down corridors, knocking doors, singing, shouting and laughing. The same group went out at 12,came in at 4 and a "young lady" left shouting bye boys at 7 am! nice!
CCtv every where, why didnt the night staff notice them doing it? they would have seen them come in, why not stop them from disturbing other customers?
There were so many things, i dont have the energy to list them.
I was offered a voucher for a free stay with Travelodge, no thanks, i am disabled and very rarely get out the house, so when i do, i will not spend any time in a travelodge again!

Room Tip: Just dont bother unless things improve after so many people have been complaining

Stayed here 28/29 June £180 paid in advance. Very small car park full on arrival and staff could not give any advice on where to park. Room tiny and very hot (no fan). Opened window but its on a busy main road so very noisy. No plug near the mirror to dry your hair. Bathroom very small, no bath mat, not even a tray in the shower to put your shower gel on. I know its classed as a 'budget' hotel but this is incredibly basic for £90 per night. We will not consider Travelodge again after this experience.

Last choice and a bit out of Town as desperate in a suburban re-developing area: New Hotel; long check-in- staff still undergoing training etc. £70+ for a double room which is good at last minute for locality but enough; Fire Doors slamming all stay and was on noisy rush hour road-side - avoid! Measly little freebie soap available for hygiene needs. Breakfast extra £7 odd if desired. Left quickly in morning...not a relaxing night. Access issues (back/front? who knows where to go). Would only go if on offer at basic price again. Friendly staff, however. Not their fault.

Room Tip: At Back off Main Rd.
