The Great Northern has recently been opened by the management behind the Champion of the Thames and Clarendon pubs. Where as first is drinks only and the second a pub with food, the Great Northern is a food venue with bar.

The menu is in fact two distinct parts. A very comprehensive snacks and light bites menu and a specials driven dining menu. The latter is short so may not suit all tastes but you can pick and mix between menus.

Our meals were from the specials. The blade steak with root veg in a rich sauce was an excellent flavour, but the meat and veg content left you wanting more. Any potatoes were also extra. On the other hand the pork schnitzel was huge and very tasty. Perhaps a bit more consistency would banish envious looks. The wine list is reasonable. Real ale is in short supply, just Doom Bar and Deuchars when we visited.

Service is friendly and the atmosphere reasonable, but lacking a focal point as the bar feels more like a serving area.

Overall an excellent transformation. The only area suggested for improvement is that the evening menu needs a bit more depth and consistency of portion sizes.

We will return.

Decent beer (not easy to find in Cambridge), friendly staff, and it's convenient for the station. The other customers might be a problem. If it's full of estate agents drinking cocktails, talk to the barman.

A friend took us along to the Great Northern and what a find it proved to be! The transforamtion of the place is amazing. Friendly atmosphere, very comfortable with a good selction of ales and wines. Not to mention the food! We chose from the specials board which had a selection of home cooked food. We all had the wonderful duck dumplings to start (you gotta' try them) and I had beef goulash, served with steamed rice, yogurt and flat bread (yummy!).and my colleagues had the lamb, served with creamy mash and roasted vegetables, which I was told was too good to share! We will be going back again soon.......

Just happen to walk by and noticed the menu written in a black board. At first I thought it was the typical pub style food establishment, but ended up being a very nice and modern atmosphere, with beautiful paintings on the wall. The menu was also very modern, with healthy, light and tasteful gourmet.

I got a chance to meet the owner and his daughter, they were very charming. I hope you get a chance to meet them as well. *** Cheers!

I was snared by the invitation to have a cheeky pint before getting on the train, but was glad I came in. The welcome was warm and friendly, the service was very good and the food and beer were excellent, and reasonably priced for the location.
