The Great Northern has recently been opened by the management behind the Champion of the Thames and Clarendon pubs. Where as first is drinks only and the second a pub with food, the Great Northern is a food venue with bar.
The menu is in fact two distinct parts. A very comprehensive snacks and light bites menu and a specials driven dining menu. The latter is short so may not suit all tastes but you can pick and mix between menus.
Our meals were from the specials. The blade steak with root veg in a rich sauce was an excellent flavour, but the meat and veg content left you wanting more. Any potatoes were also extra. On the other hand the pork schnitzel was huge and very tasty. Perhaps a bit more consistency would banish envious looks. The wine list is reasonable. Real ale is in short supply, just Doom Bar and Deuchars when we visited.
Service is friendly and the atmosphere reasonable, but lacking a focal point as the bar feels more like a serving area.
Overall an excellent transformation. The only area suggested for improvement is that the evening menu needs a bit more depth and consistency of portion sizes.
We will return.
