From the moment we arrived at the hotel our stay was special , a warm greeting from the lovely team in reception we were shown to our room that we had been upgraded to .... Mad fish which is a beautiful studio suite with a beautiful roll top bath in the room ! We were also greeted with a personalised welcome note ! Our nights stay was quite expensive but with the room upgrade was worth every penny ! Car was taken away and valet parked service from start to finish superb with hotel having a lovely relaxed atmosphere ! Wonderful hotel will be back again !,

Room Tip: Mad fish studio suite

I've stayed at Hotel Du Vin twice on businesstrips and hope to come back. A true boutique hotel with great rooms that all seem to vary and you definitely get a very cosy feeling and the staff is very friendly. Breakfast is excellent (have not had dinner there yet).

We stayed here for one night as we were having a weekend in Cambridge for a birthday. Service was good and attentive. The room was large and well equipped, great bathroom with a really deep and long bath. The room was however, a bit dark. Fabulous mattress - slept very well. Breakfast was excellent and the bar area is also very nice. Not sure if it was worth the money though - it is very pricey indeed but it is in a great location.

Room Tip: We had a road side room and had very little noise.

We took a holiday to Cambridge from London to celebrate our 5 year anniversary. Cambridge was chosen for two reasons - we could bring our dog with us to this lovely hotel as well as he was welcome to The Cambridge Distillery where we made a custom bottle of gin to celebrate.

Everything was ready when we checked in at 2pm and we were shown our room immediately. Though on the ground floor, the room itself was very quiet and faced the back of the hotel, with ample light, looking out onto the bamboo patio. We had everything we needed in our room, and only needed to request ice + bucket for our special wine we brought with us.

Disappointing was the Bistrot. We booked in early for dinner initially and then asked if we could change the booking to 8pm, which didn't seem to be a problem. When we turned up for dinner, we saw the restaurant setting and decided we'd like a table by the window and were happy to wait down in the bar. 50 mins later, we were checked upon and brought menus. No indication when our table would be ready. By this time, we had ordered some snacks from the bar and glanced a bit at the menu. I was particularly excited Bouillabaisse was on the menu as a main. The bar staff (Daniel, in particular) looked after us whilst we waited, and again went to check on our table for us. Finally, at 9:30pm we were collected by the server from the Bistrot and seated at a great table overlooking the street and clear view out the window. We ordered a starter and main immediately, as we had waited much longer than anticipated - and becoming quite intoxicated. The starters were alright, but most disappointing were our mains. Bouillabaisse was basically pureed tinned tomatoes with 'fish flavouring' added in - a small piece of each Red mullet, monkfish, Seabass and ONE Prawn - tiny portion for £19! I could not believe this restaurant had such prestige but they were trying to fool customers by serving up something any novice cook could put together. My husband had the Roast Cod and he said it was incredibly salty and over-seasoned (as if to hide something).

When asked how our meals were, we were honest. The server apologised but did not offer to take anything off the bill. They brought us anniversary sweets, but by then, neither my husband nor I were interested in eating much more from the Bistrot. When the bill came, there were more discrepancies which needed clearing up.

It is hard to rate this property - as the property itself was great, as well as the bar and staff. The biggest disappointment was the meal at the Bistrot. My breakfast the next day at Browns about fifty metres from the front of Hotel du Vin was by far superior. We should have eaten there despite it being a big chain.

Moral to the story - enjoy the HdV property, don't eat the food.

Room Tip: Big standard room for people travelling with a dog - be sure to get a room not facing the street.

Our second visit to the Hotel di Vin Bistro and after the last one a year ago when we enjoyed our Sunday lunch we booked a weekday lunch in the Bistro with some enthusiasm. However it was not to be! We skipped starters and went straight to the mains which were moules for me and goats cheese and spinach roulade for my wife. My moules were OK, not the best I've had by a long way but OK. The roulade however was a disaster. The first attempt was so dry it had to be sent back; not something we normally do! Why was it quite so dry? Not sure but we feel a freezer and microwave were involved somewhere along the line! The next attempt was definitely better but come on, you guys have an AA rosette for culinary excellence and this was nowhere near culinary excellence so pull your socks up!

Spent two nights here recently catching up with some friends and fancied going to Cambridge for a change. Its a great city, very walkable, fascinating architecture, lots of choices with restaurants and bars etc and of course the University. The Hotel Du Vin is ideally located and very easy to find in the centre of the city. Overall we had a great time in this hotel although there were a few negatives that took the edge off the experience. To begin with, there is a deep gulley that runs the length of the outside of the property. My car is quite low and I didn't see it! How I didn't go down it was a miracle, had I done so it would have caused some serious damage to the car. Without doubt this should be pointed out when you book so you can prepare yourself, no such advice was given. The guy that valet parked the car for me was very apologetic but said that people had driven down this gulley previously so thought needs to be given to advising new customers of this potential problem. We booked a large suite as described on the website, turned out to be a large room, not a suite, which was very nice. Problem was, it was at the back of the property on the first floor and was looked over directly by a series of laboratory buildings, hence we were directly looked into and as such had to have the curtains closed most of the time. In addition all their lights were left on well into the night but thankfully the curtains were thick enough to block this out. For one of their better category rooms this was a real problem for us. In spite of these niggles, the staff were all wonderful, extremely helpful and attentive, quirky bar serving great cocktails, the food in the Bistro both at breakfast and dinner was of a very good quality, so all in all a good weekend. We have been to three other HDV properties previously and think overall they have a very good product offering.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front of the building, although looking over the road it is more preferable th...
