“This hotel could be so much better”
Reviewed 27 February 2010

We had not previously stopped at a Hotel du Vin and had high hopes.
However, the original concept of a boutique hotel with luxury bed linen, fluffy white towels and designer bathrooms plus gourmet food and wine has been copied and improved upon so often it seems this particular hotel has been left behind.
The staircases are steep (no lift to the top floor and carry your own luggage),and the walls display photos of drunken undergraduates at May Balls.
Our room on the third floor had tired decor, was cramped, and worst of all there was no bath! Where were the added little extras to lift it out of the ordinary?
The bar was packed in the evening. Service in the bistro was very slow although the food was good, but we would recommend Loch Fyne restaurant just down the street as a better option.
Plus parking is pretty impossible nearby except overnight.

My boyfriend booked the trip to cambridge as a surprise. It was Valentines day and he booked the room back in December. He managed to get a special rate as it was sunday night so the package included the room plus evening meal and breakfast . I really couldn't fault the service , when we arrived the staff were very attentive ( much better than my experiences in the Hotel Du Vin Newcastle and Harrogate ) . They also parked the car which took away the hassle of trying to find a space. The room was a great size ( Henley ) and clean. The dinner was three courses and was lovely. The breakfast was also fantastic , there was so much to choose from. The special deal was brilliant value for money, dinner at any other restaurant on Valentines night would have cost moe than the whole package. Cambridge is beautiful and the shopping is great , the location of the hotel was perfect . The only downside, we were left in the dark when we switched the iron on - it tripped the fuse ...a very bizarre experience , the manager was up to the room in no time and rectified the situation .

Stayed for a weekend. Was not informed that the only dining facility, the bistro attached to the hotel, was fully booked for the evening so had to request the manager to find us dining facilities elsewhere - very restful! The bedroom was next to the store room/ house managers room so banging and talking from 7.30am onwards. The only room to sit and relax in was occupied for private functions. Whilst the facilities were generally good, for the money I would expect a little more thought and consideration going into our stay. Too often the hotel patrons seem to come out second best...

Nice, beautiful room but our view was on a really ugly building, too expensive parking, too expensive bistrot. Also, no Cambridge map available at the reception, just a "google map" printed page. Service good.

We stayed for one night on Sunday Jan 3rd, to avail of the hotel's special offer - room for 35 pounds providing 75 pounds spent in the restaurant (additional 15 pounds for valet parking away from the hotel). This was easily achieved as it included a couple of drinks in the bar before dinner. We were pleased with our room which overlooked a small courtyard area at the back of the hotel. The courtyard looked a nice space to enjoy drinks in the warmer weather - so be warned we suspect this could potentially be noisy. We had dinner in the restaurant at 8pm and were surprised at just how busy it was. Food was good - not fabulous - but pretty good with very attentive service. The bar in the cellar had a good atmosphere although was fairly quiet. We did not have the (rather expensive) breakfast but chose to eat close by for less. All in all a good night away and would definitely recommended, especially as easily walkable to the city centre.

One of the best place in UK i've ever visited! Stayed at Hotel Du Vin just a few meters from Cambridge University. Cambridge is famous above all for it's illustrious University, but it's tale begins long before the arrival of the first academic refugees from riotous Oxford in 1209.

We travelled to Hotel du Vin for a two-day honeymoon - booking only the night before as our trip to Bruges was cancelled because of problems with Eurostar. When we arrived, the staff were fantastic - they upgraded us to a studio room and even provided complementary champagne. The room was superb - spacious and well equipped. Cambridge itself is lovely, and to top it off we had an excellent meal in the bistro. Highly recommended.
