“Tasty, basic fayre and unpretencious”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 September 2010

Three of us dined here on a Saturday night recently. No problem booking on the day, but chose to go for the later time offered (8.30pm) as it was clear they were operating a 2-sitting policy. Service was brusque and not over-welcoming, but friendly and efficient enough. Taking of orders was somewhat rushed, but our waiter was helpful and honest when asked for recommendations. Starters of soft-shell crab and vegetable tempura were good. main courses of beef curry, chicken curry and duck in a thick sauce were nice, if unsophisticated. Not that we were expecting or needing that. It was pleasant but all very rushed and impersonal. Nevertheless at £22 a head, we were happy enough. Note: no on-license so has a BYO policy with a very reasonable £1.50 ph corkage charge. Turns out they did have beer though!

“good food and service, but not authentic”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 February 2010

My friends who have lived here for a year or so thought it was "easily the best restaurant" in Cambridge. However, as someone who is passing through from New York, I thought the food bordered on mediocre and definitely not authentic. Although our waiter was Vietnamese, only one of the three dishes we ordered would be on the menu in a Vietnamese restaurant patronized by Vietnamese people back home. My marinated chicken breast tasted more like chicken teriyaki from an average Japanese restaurant. The pho (rice noodle soup) was served with the bean sprouts and lime juice already placed in the bowl, instead of on the side as usual. No mint leaves were offered. The broth was thick and smelled like I expected it to. Our waiter was attentive, but his grasp of English was limited and got one order wrong and forgot one item. On a positive note, the desserts were delicious (although again not terribly authentic) and the place had charming atmosphere. The tables are very close together but there is an elegant, proper restaurant ambiance. This is a BYOB with a 1.20 pound per person corkage charge and 10% service charge added to the bill (which came without descriptions so we had to ask what we were actually charged for). I would probably come back because my friends enjoyed it.

“Excellent lunchtime dining”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 August 2009

We went for lunchtime and arrived just before 12 - good job we did as within 15 minutes it was full. Rather small and a tight fit in with everyone, but the service was attentive and friendly.

Had the set lunchtime menu which was great value at £7.95 for two courses. Prices for evening menu looked very pricey but from other people ordering looked to get a lot for your menu.

Food was hot, delicious and would happily go back again for lunch.

“Nice place, shame about the manager and opening hours”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 August 2009

Nice food, but the manager makes you feel like you're in a kindergarten. He's a very rude man who made it quite clear that he wanted us to settle our bill and leave. They have quite early closing hours for a restaurant which we were unaware of (2130) so by 2230 we'd very much outstayed our welcome.
A nice birthday meal, ruined at the end by the manager.

“lovely restaurant with family atmosphere”

We really enjoyed our evening at Thanh Binh. Food was very good and the service attentive. The restaurant is located in the centre of Cambridge and appears to be very popular with locals.
