“Hairy Bikers 2014 UK Tour”
Reviewed 16 July 2014

Penultimate leg of our 2014 UK Tour. 1200km behind us and the last overnight stay. What an interesting place! Superb location, beautiful small old building with a great deal of history. Basically its a restaurant / pub with 4 rooms above it. "Quirky" would describe it perfectly. Low ceilings, a little outdated all add to the charm. Food was superb. Of all the 4 places we stayed the food here was by far the best. Breakfast also was outstanding. I see the reputation is more for the excellent cuisine rather than its venue as a B&B however with its location by the canal it really is something quite unique and special.

This was our second visit to the Anchor Inn. The previous occasion was in deep snow and the inn provided a warm refuge. This time we visited in the rain! We had hoped for a walk along the river and then a rewarding lunch! However the food more than made up for the vagaries of the English climate. The food was even better than the first occasion. The roast beef was full of flavour and tender, the vegetables fresh and crisp. The sticky toffee pudding was beyond delicious. The service was a little on the slow side at times, but this was a very minor negative.

Selected The Anchor from Alastair Sawday's Guide for a place to stay after my son's graduation and as a celebratory dinner location away from the crowds of Cambridge. Situated on the banks of the New Bedford River/Hundred Foot Drain [one of Vermuyden's classics] in Fenland west of Ely, it is a wonderful place to relax. Enjoyed excellent beer outside looking towards Great Horseley Fen. Delicious food included as starters halloumi salad and baked camembert and, for mains, roast fillet of beef and duck washed down with a rather good Brazilian red [a nod to world cup year]. Breakfast was tasty and huge. The rooms were great; I note there has been some criticism made by others and cannot speak to whether these have been upgraded but, whatever the former position, this was a delightful place to stay. Hoping to return next year.

Room Tip: The New Bedford Suite is very pleasant

Really nice meal. We had razor clams and scallops to start, followed by chicken with asparagus and vension on rosti. The quality was very high and the combinations of flavours were unusual and effective. It is definitely a high-end gastro pub (it came to about eighty pounds for three courses with wine for two), but it is clearly very popular and we were lucky to get a table. We had a nice walk afterwards along the river.

(We stayed at a B&B in the village, so my comments are just about the restaurant, rather than the accommodation).

I stayed here for one night in May. The setting was lovely and the staff were nice. However the car park was tiny and we had to park on the road. The room was tired. It was probably quite nice a few years ago but it needs redecorating. The towels and flannels had seen there best days. They were faded, frayed and it wouldn't take much to replace them. The bed was
very uncomfortable. Other than that it was acceptable.

Superb meal. Okay the restaurant isn't high end decor, having wooden tables and basic decoration. But the food more than makes up for it.
Our starters were delicious and the mains even better. Service was good with just the right amount of interest and attention.
Next time we're in the area we will definitely eat here again.

Had a great Sunday lunch here , from the online booking facility which is great ,to the friendly and warm welcome we received it was a lovely Sunday lunch. The food was excellent , we both had the beef which was cooked just how we like it. We will definitely be back here , it's a lovely spot as well by the river. The service was excellent even though the restaurant was full. This is really a review of a pub lunch not of the hotel which we didn't stay at.
