We sailed to Alderney in July 2017 and thought we would book this restaurant right on the Harbour Side as it is known for its good seafood.
Having booked the table we later phoned to say we thought we would be late and please could we move the table back an hour – this was not a problem.
The first thing we noticed when we entered was the very friendly greeting from the owner and all staff. I know this shouldn’t be a surprise but sadly these days it isn’t always the case.
We were shown to our table on the first floor and seated by the window overlooking the harbour. It may be an idea to request this if the view is important to you, as I don’t think all tables would enjoy a sea view.
We all ordered the freshly caught grilled sardines for a starter and they were plump, beautiful and simply presented.
Two of us ordered the lobster thermidor for our main course and I must say it is probably the best I have ever had. The flavour was wonderful and the amount of lobster was impressive. Further, it was not over grilled and so the flesh of the lobster was still wonderfully juicy.
Accompanying side dishes were of a good size and tasty and we were told to ask for more if we needed any. However, the portions were such that they filled three starving sailors without the need for extras.
We thought the prices were very reasonable.
When we had finished eating, the lovely lady who owns The First & Last stopped at our table for a chat and was absolutely charming.
We will definitely be visiting Alderney again as soon as we can & will make The First & Last our first port of call.
After we had left we realised that our watches were not set to local time, so not only had we moved the table time but we had then turned up at the wrong hour anyway…and not an eyebrow had been raised!
