“Lovely carriage ride with April and Alfred!”

Our carriage ride with April and Alfred (the horse!) was brilliant. We really enjoyed hearing all about island life from our lovely carriage rider April (who happens to be from the same area as us...it's a small world!). We would definitely recommend stopping off at the garden attraction which is beautiful, especially if you're lucky enough to go while the sun's shining!

Arrived for first time visit for a day about 6 horse and carriages waiting at the top of the hill to take us on island trip. Beware, they are all different drivers and charge different prices, the guys at the beginning of the line have the advantage of appproaching potential customers first, ask them all first for prices, they all follow the same route for the 2hour trip. Very good value for money to see the island for the first time and a very interesting way to learn about the island and its way of life from the driver.

For £15 can do a 2 1/2 hour guided tour of Sark. The guides have a sound knowledge of the island as they live on Sark and have experienced life there.

There are no cars on the island which make it unique, very peaceful. In fact we hope to stay there next year. Tractors are the only form of transport. There is a tractor bus which takes visitors up the steep hill into the village. A great place for walking and star gazing.

You can hire a bicycle to ride around the island. Access to the island is by boat.

During our four night stay in Guernsey in the Channel Islands we spent one wonderful day in Sark, one of the smaller islands. The day starts with an hour ferry ride from St. Peter’s Port…a lovely trip in itself as you pass by other islands. Upon arrival, you can walk or ride in a conveyance drawn by a tractor (I recommend the latter…it’s only a pound) up a very steep hill to “town”. There are no cars on the island. You have three choices to take in the island (only 3 ½ miles long): horse drawn carriage, bicycle or foot. We chose the carriage, which was very nice although we thought we might have to get out a few times and help our 18 year old horse Paddy make it up the next hill. One of our party had a recent knee replacement and the new one functions well walking or hiking but not yet riding a bike (it has to bend too much), but next time we would likely take a bike. You can cover more ground (especially with Paddy) and you can stay as long as you like with any of the views of/from the cliffs, which are wonderful.

I could easily imagine spending several days on this tiny island slowly absorbing an unrelenting beauty as one would walk much/all of the 42 mile circumference of the island. The island’s attraction is its beauty. But if one is pressed for time, we discovered it is very much worth a leisurely day.

This slows you down to Sark pace; a quiet, gentle ride down leafy avenues accompanied by walkers, bicycle riders, and the odd tractor. The driver will point out all the salient points, and bring you, gently, into Sark life. Cares drop away.
