I had my birthday dinner last night in the restaurant at Oddfellows in Chester - the one that looks out on to the courtyard at the back. The chef is called Richard Phillips and from the quality of yesterday's meal he clearly knows what he is doing.
I has a blackberry and elderflower Bellini as an aperitif - delicious. To start with I has seard rare beef with a blue cheese garnish but I think my husband slightly edged it with a squash risotto with scallops. Mains were sea bass with chorizo and a crackly belly of pork. The three timess cooked fat chips were fantastic. The portions are not gargantuan so room for dessert _ caramelised pear tarte and sticky toffee pudding - beautifully souffled so as not to stodge.
Chester is full of horrid restaurants you would only visit once. However this food is outstanding. The bar in front of the restaurant is very lively so ask for a table close to the window. Service was friendly.
