This is a well situated hotel, within a short walk of Chester city centre. Stayed for 2 nights on business, accompanied by my wife. Other positives beside location are the service in the restaurant (breakfast), the quality of the breakfast, the free undercroft parking and the friendly staff. Nice bathroom with modern facilities and large shower cubicle (no bath). Negatives - not many. Only one chair in room, no table for your food/coffee other than the desk. I have given 5 blobs but toyed with 4 as it is a marginal call. Hard to put into words but the standard room lacked a wow factor. It has everything you need and I know from previous stays that there are much better rooms which do have the wow factor (we once had a suite which was fantastic, including free-standing bath in the bedroom and split level floor). You get what you pay for but on this occasion, we were left feeling a little short changed with the room. Nonetheless, still recommended.

Room Tip: Go for the best room you can afford

I really couldn't fault it. We were going to the races and booked a room here. The rooms are beautiful with a fantastic view over the racecourse. Michael caines restaurant was exceptional. Fantastic food with friendly knowledgeable waiters. Will be staying again soon.

Fabulous suite: Nice sized room with a great balcony but in need of some serious TLC. Lose tiles on the bathroom floor particularlydangerous, recption phone not working. For the premium price, I would expect a lot more.

Booked a 1 night stay on 04/08/14 for a night away from home. Arrived for check in late afternoon, booked a desirible room with breakfast for £123 on the Abode website. When checking in, we were told that we had only booked a room only. This was not the case as we knew we had booked breakfast as we double check everything we book, we did not have a print off, of the confirmation email. Was told we could up grade for breakfast, eventually after trying to get on hotel free wi- fi/our mobile wi-fi. Recepton staff found our booking on it's system and we had as said, booked breakfast. They said for some reason it was not showing up on it's system. You can not say much to that! Young ladies on reception were friendly and polite on a positive note. But this is not what you need when you check into a hotel. Room that was allocated was on floor 4, with a balcony over looking part of the race course. Very nice, but for a 4* a few extras in room for the price we payed would have been nice such as a fridge/mini bar (no point in having a food/drink basket in room if you can not chill your drinks, warm juice and water in hot weather is not great). Instructions on how to open the patio door in a more clear way, as an elderly person would stuggle with the design of the doors. Room was quiet. The view was loverly with the Welsh hills in view. Now back to another issue. Decided to go and have a meal in the Michael Caine restaurant. As a Monday night, did not think would have to book. Went up and was told fully booked. You would expect like most hotel chains with 'famous' name hotel restaurants to at least leave a few tables or so free for residents of the hotel. Abode were still selling the stay, breakfast and dinner package the night before. How does this work? Not great is it! We ended up going to a loverly restaurant in Chester for half the price. Was going to spend a lot of £ at Michael Caine's and treat ourselfs to a bottle of expensive champage, oh well! As said before quite nights sleep, just the odd noise of doors closing/sockets and switches. Not a problem at all. Awoke on the Tuesday morning and had breakfast, on a positive note it was a loverly cooked breakfast. In fact the nicest hotel breakfast we have had in a long while, hot and freshly cooked to your requirements. Check out was fine/left our baggage till our return lunchtime train journey. The staff are friendly, but the management must sort out the above mentioned issues. The answer to the question is if we would stay again? this is in the trip advisor title of the review.

Great hotel and trip. Upon arriving home, discovered £21 pound had been taken from my account by the hotel. When I phoned to query, got very little explanation, and was told I would get a call back. Didn't receive a call back, when a called again I was told it was for breakfast, when we specifically didn't book breakfast nor have breakfast! Still waiting for refund. Disappointing end to a great and enjoyable stay.
