Althought the room was clean and tidy , the accomodation was not all that good . The staff were over worked as they seemed to be short staffed serving food as well as working behind the bar at the same time. You get what you pay for with the food too cheap and cheerful although apple pie was lovely . Then bed time came , i understand it was a pub and there would be music it did go off at 11.30 pm . Then early hours the managers dog decided to run around above us for about 15 minutes in time gaps of 10 -15 mins as you finally fell asleep in between this time was woken again by it jumping about and one point barking . it was about 1 - 2 in morning onwards and then again about 4am . i did complain to the manageress who said sorry you didnt get any sleep but my dog is usually quiet and some drunk was trying to get into my flat she was not at all sympathetic . it was worse as my boyfriend had half marathon in the morning.we would never stay here again.

We arrived at the hotel at approximately 12.45 pm on Bank Holiday Monday, 6 May 2013 and were greeted by what we thought was a member of staff but turned out to be a customer who has stayed at the hotel many times before. He pointed us in the right direction so that we could check in. We told the lad behind the bar that we weren't sure what time we could check in from and he said that we could check in straightaway but that the room might not be ready (as it wasn't) but we could put our bags straight in. We were grateful that we didn't have to wait to check in as we had arranged to meet friends that afternoon and weren't planning on being back too early. The bed was lovely and comfortable, as we had what they called the "posh" room, the one with the sleigh bed. The bathroom was clean but we did take our own towels as another reviewer had mentioned that the towels were tiny and he was right - they are the size I would wrap round my head. I also do agree that a bin would have been nice in the bedroom as well as the bathroom. The bath is huge and the water is VERY hot. We used the bath on one occasion as we were aching from the amount of walking we had done round Chester. The location is convenient and there was a reasonable size car park. We are not really breakfast people but we did go down the first morning and you could have whatever you wanted. We generally went out every day but we always finished off in the hotel bar for one drink before going up to bed and the staff were very friendly. I would recommend the hotel but mainly if you are going as a couple as it is over a pub.

Room Tip: Ask for room 30 - this is the one with the sleigh bed and it is very comfortable.

This is more of a B&B rather than a hotel. We stayed in a double room which was more suited to a single bed or bunk beds as it was so small you couldn't walk around the bed as there wasn't enough room. The room was a garish yellow in colour and desperately needed redecorating and a new bathroom to get rid of the black damp mould spots in the shower. if you are after a quiet relaxing break then this is not the place to stay, the pub is in the middle of a central reservation and surrounded by a busy main road also the noise from the pub below is continuous until closing time. Also we were woken at 07.45am on Bank Holiday Monday by a booze delivery.

The place is perfectly located close to the city centre this, the breakfast and the friendly staff is the only good thing about this place. Great for stag do's who only want a place to stay for a few hours.

I booked the 'luxury double' room which was a good size, spotlessly clean and featured a very comfortable sleigh bed. I agree with an earlier review that suggested a bin in the bedroom as well as in the bathroom would be useful. The bathroom again was spotless and the bath was large with plenty of gushing hot water!
On our first morning at breakfast we sat down and after a few minutes a member of staff came and asked what we would like for breakfast but without a menu or any information I didn't know what we could chose from and was advised that I could have a "full english, bacon sandwich or anything really" which was a bit vague to say the least! We plumped for the full english and can recommend this as it was nicely cooked, really tasty and filling.
The pub is about 5 mins walk from the Northgate which is accessed via an underpass but at night when the traffic was quiet we gave the underpass a miss and walked back over the road above it.
I would definately come back and stay here as the value for money makes it possible for us to have more short breaks away. I think the thing to remember is you are staying in a room over a working pub but if you want a decent, clean room, parking, a good location for the City and a good breakfast then I think that you'll be happy here.

Room Tip: The deluxe room has 2 windows - one overlooking the back car park and one overlooking the road at th...

We spent one night at the George & Dragon. Just a 5 minute taxi ride from the railway station and a 5 minute walk from the City walls it's location is excellent. We booked the de-luxe double but felt that the room was lacking something, given that it was advertised as their top of the range room. In general, the reception area, stairwell and room looked a bit dated and a lick of paint and deep clean wouldn't have gone amiss. On the plus side, given its location on a very busy road, noise from traffic was minimal and the bed comfy - although the towels in the bathroom were tiny!

Breakfast was served in the bar and was lovely but maybe a proper breakfast menu with options other than the full English might be food for thought for the owners in the future.

Whilst staying in Chester we walked the walls which took about an hour, explored the many fabulous shops - check out the Mad Hatters Tea Shop - and had our evening meal in Chez Jules, a fantastic French bistro just a 5 minute walk from the hotel. Their French Gastronomique evening of 5 courses for £25 was an absolute delight!

On balance, I don't think I'd stay at the George & Dragon again but this is purely down to there being so many places to explore in this marvellous city.

The hotel did look a little run down when we first arrived but then it is on a busy road, however the location was excellent and you can literally see the gate way to Chester from the hotel (which is a 5 minute walk) I was worried that it would be noisy as you were on a busy road, and the hum from the air con units did worry me, but there was literally no noise when it was time for bed. We did have the feature room which was spotless. The staff are very polite and very helpful. Only downside was I do like fruit for breakfast and although the breakfast was adequate maybe a bowl of fresh fruit salad would be a good idea, and not so much a moan but more of a suggestion if i was the manager i would put a bin near the breakfast table for the empty ceral packets and teabags and maybe offer more toast. I would also suggest a little bin next to the tea, coffee making facilities (which was very well stocked) there is a bin in the bathroom but a bin in the bedroom is always useful. Saying that we would definately stay again and i would advise anyone thinking of going to Chester to stay here. It is reasonably priced , very central, very clean in the rooms and nothing seemed to much trouble. Thank you

Room Tip: we have the featured room which was £10 more but had a good space
