Just got home from a fantastic two day break, staying at the Commercial, right slap bang in the centre of Chester. I have to say that it is one of the most quirky places my wife and I have stayed, for a long time.

The Commercial historically, was an old late Georgian Town house. It was then converted into one of Chester's main public administrative buildings before being turned into a small pub (with other offices). In recent years the whole building has been being leased to the present owner(s), Rebecca Davies and her business partners. Keeping all the old downstairs rooms’ separate (but joined) makes for a very unusual set of bar/drinking/cocktail rooms where you can escape with groups of friends/colleagues, or enjoy a quiet drink in your own company or some 'close' friend.
We did not experience the Guest DJ night or late night licence because we were too ‘whacked’ from 2 very long days of visiting my daughter at university! I fancied a beer and although the mind was willing, the body was certainly not! I am therefore unable to comment on the ‘entertainment’ side of The Commercial.

The upstairs accommodation has been very tastefully converted into 5 'Poets' rooms. We stayed in Keats' room and everything about the room oozed class. It is certainly clear that a lot of thought went into its design. Rebecca’s attention to detail skills, have to be admired too. We just loved the Keats poetry book with it bookmarked to one of Keats' poems on slumber and sleeping (the title escapes me).

All of the bedroom furniture is very stylish. A mix of art deco/French Renaissance of a 'no expense spared' quality standard. The bath was large and there was a separate power/massage shower and the double his and her sinks, were super. Also, not only were the towels of a superior quality (white and very fluffy), all the complimentary toiletries were really nice and had that 'expensive' feel to them (I could eat – not literally – the grapefruit shower gel!). Another bonus in the room was the 32 inch flat screen TV.
The complimentary tea and coffee (Fairtrade), fizzy spa water and lovely biscuits, were also of the highest standard. The bed had a tempur mattress with lovely soft pillows and was so comfortable. We slept like babes on our first night. It was certainly a great room.
The only thing lacking though, was the Wifi connection. It was very hit and miss (more miss unfortunately) but we were at the furthest most part of the hotel. I guess I could have gone down to the bar to use the laptop (if I was really that desperate).

We only were able to enjoy breakfast on this visit (we will be going back), but the quality of the ingredients were obviously of the freshest and highest standard - lovely. We look forward to trying out the bistro/restaurant food next time.

You will be aware of other reviews where people have complained about the noise from the bar and resident DJ. Don't be too disheartened though. We were on the top floor and did not hear any music.
**** TOP TIP - ask for a room at the top of the house (Keats or Wordsworth) or do what we do. Invest in some wax malleable ear plugs (just over £2 for 10) from Boots. We take them everywhere with us!

To be fair though, the music nights are advertised on the hotel web pages (Rebecca is not hiding the fact that there is music entertainment), and if you are reading this, you will be aware that there might be noise issues – it certainly did not spoil our stay though (fogies in our mid-forties) and we will definitely be returning. If you really do want ‘quiet’, perhaps staying in the centre of Chester City (where there are also adjacent nightclubs), is not for you. However, if you want a quality room, a very nice breakfast, evening entertainment (and LATE drinking if you are younger than me and up for it!), then you will love it here. Oh, I nearly forgot to mention how good the staff are – they are very, very, very good and nothing is too much for them. Rebecca lives for her business and wants you to enjoy your stay there.

We didn’t get much time to look around Chester, but the Commercial is located in the heart of the city and within the main shopping (the double tiered shops) area. We are looking at returning around Christmas time.

Room Tip: If you want a really quiet night, ask for a top floor room if there are any available. Or visit on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday nights when there is not usually a resident DJ - check the website for entertainment itineraries.

Just returned from a 2 night break at the Commercial Hotel. We cannot thank Rebecca and her staff enough, nothing was too much trouble they were all really friendly and welcoming. The room was perfect, spotlessly clean and really comfortable. I agree with some of the comments that it is quite noisey on a Friday and a Saturday but this was explained to us when we booked so there was no surprise and considering we were one of last ones to leave on Saturday it was not a problem. We ate in the hotel on Saturday night and the food was amazing, real quality fine dining. We will definately be booking again. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who enjoys a lively weekend, if you want a great location to explore Chester you can't go wrong at The Commercial.

Just returned from a two night stay in this lovely hotel. Staff are so friendly and inviting, the rooms are excellent, spotlessly clean, as are the bathrooms.

Our cooked breakfast was plentiful, well cooked, served hot and we were asked several times if we wanted more drinks etc.

The only down side is the loud music on Friday and Saturday nights from the disco in the bar. Ear plugs recommended!! Having said that we would definitely stay at this hotel again, it couldn't be nearer to all the shops and only ten minutes from the river. Really enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: Look at the website, all the rooms are excellent

Went here as we bought a voucher via moneysupermarket.com for buy one get one free.

Have been here on nights out but just drinking and always fancied it for Sunday lunch.

Upon arrival we were seated in one of the rooms off the bar, and not the actual restaurant. We were the only people in there and felt a bit "out of the way".

The waiter was polite and professional but then informed us that there was a very limited range of food available , this was 1pm on a Sunday so we were a bit shocked.

We had starters and a main, chicken caesar salad and then chicken dinner for me. The salad was really nice I have to say, but the chicken dinner was poor. Quite tasteless, the potatoes were undercooked and the veg overcooked.

The other people in my party all stated that while the food wasn't awful, it was just "ok". This is not a cheap place but it felt like because we had a voucher we were treated differently which is not on at all.

It should have been so much better.

Hi buddy - really sorry you had a poor experience. We have had a couple of complanints about hard roasties lately and we have taken action on this. It is an unwelcome blip and I hope to make amends :)

All our food is fresh and generally has been outstanding. We have just launched our new Autumn menu with our new chef Steve and would like to invite you back one evening in the week - a treat on us.

Please drop me (David coughlin) an email to info@thecommercialhotelchester.co.uk and we will arrange a convenient date for you
