“Good place for a few days in Chester”
Reviewed 5 August 2012

We found our 'queen' room in the 'old' building to be elegant, spacious, clean and comfortable, with some quaintly uneven and creaky underlying floorboards (but then Chester is an historical city). The building has an abundance of objets d'art, some large (some very large) and some small, which generate an enjoyable, if slightly querky ambience. All the staff - reception, restaurant, bar and cleaning - were pleasant, courteous and helpful, without being patronising, obsequious or 'programmed'. Dinner was OK, although I suspect they don't get many outside punters paying the advertised price (which may, as in so many other places, be there to make people think what a good deal they are getting). Breakfast was wide-ranging and excellent, with lots of choice. We were on a special deal so I can't comment on the value-for-money aspect of rack-rate prices.

Room Tip: There's a refurbished original building and a newer block with more 'modern' rooms. We...

Firstly let me start by saying that a) I stay in UK hotels at least two -three times per week b) The staff very very good and this is no reflection on them.

This hotel is dated, in desperate need of refurbishment and was not worth the £116.00 we paid, which didn't include breakfast which was £10.00, each or parking at £15.00. The room we had was not good with a hole in the wall, a cracked window pane and mold on the lining of the curtains. The bathroom rail heater couldn't be turned off so the room was boiling.

Not a great location either right opposite the railway station. Wouldn't stay here again there are probably much better hotels in Chester. Its a shame because it could be great.

Room Tip: Have breakfast in the pub across the road its only £4.25 for a full english. V Tasty

Great value two day break at the hotel. All the staff were courteous and helpful. Upgraded to an Executive room which had been refurbished in the 'older' style, which we felt was totally in keeping with the hotel. Breakfast was excellent with a wide choice of hot and cold buffet food. Totally agree with the comments that this hotel has a certain charm and elegance. Wonderful location for the railway station enabling us to go to Liverpool on a cheap day return. Only minor criticism is the car par charge of £10/weekday for guests staying in the hotel. Nevertheless, we will certainly be coming back.

This hotel is in two distinct halves: a grand, old building which is beautiful (but tatty in places) and at the end of a long linking corridor, a converted concrete office block. Another guest said his room in the modern building was poky although our room in the old part was spacious, elegant and plush.
When booking I was told the car park was 'very secure'. It's not: anyone can wander in and out, no security cameras visible and £10/day. Further back along City Road there is one for £4/day which I wish I had used.
The biggest problem was the suffocating heat in the room (the weather outside was only 16ºC). My theory is the pipe to the heated towel rail is under the floor. We had to sleep with the window open all night, so we got woken at 06:00 by the buses outside.
All the staff went out of their way to be polite, friendly and helpful. The nicest hotel staff I have met. Breakfast is an all-you-can-eat buffet with a chef cooking eggs and omelettes fresh to order - superb variety and quality of foods.
Our deal had dinner included but the food was a bit bland and lacklustre.

Room Tip: At the old part of the hotel, the North side has bus stands outside which are noisy but the other si...

I stayed here on a business trip in July 2012. It was booked direct by my employer. Given that it is situated right next to the railway station, I did have misgivings as I approached it by car, but when I checked in I was very pleasantly surprised. The food (dinner and breakfast) was excellent, the rooms large, clean and comfortable, and the hotel itself had a certain charm and elegance that hadn't faded at all - sort of a patriotic ambience without the cheeseyness?

I would highly recommend it.

On behalf of myself and my daughter we would like to thank the staff for a wondeful evening on 7th July 2012. It was our joint 50th and 21st birthdays. in particular Paul and Sarh deserve our biggest thanks, Sarah with her expertise in planning and ideas and Paul for the seamless organisation on the night. The bar and waiting staff were polite and very efficient. Our guests were delighted that some of the waitresses joined in with our suprise Zumba class. Your staff are a credit to your organisation and we would appreciate if you could pass on out rhanks to the fore mentioned people
