“A joy everytime”
Reviewed 20 February 2011

This was the fourth time of staying at the Queen and while it has rather elegant surroundings it also has a relaxed friendly vibe. The staff are always very attentive and professional as well as friendly. The only negative I found on this occassion was the someone representing the restaurant trying to get people to book in for that evening while we were trying to check into the hotel, and although I appreciate in the current climate that this may be worthwhile I did find it a little offputting. the hotel has lovely comfortable rooms kept to a very good standard, I would recommend this hotel to anyone as I don't feel anyone would be disappointed. Well worth a visit !

We have never been to Chester but I deciced to take my partner there for a romantic 2 nights away as part of his birthday treat. We had an amazing time!
The hotel has a WOW factor from the second you walk into the reception area.
I booked a Queen Suite and was blown away with how large the room was, the huge bed and amazing bathroom. The bath was absolutely enormous. (the only downside was the shower, bit useless really - but did not spoil anything)
We opted for a full english breakfast which was self service. It was fantastic, lots of choice and hot !!! Tea & coffee in abundance.
The staff went out of their way to help everyone, and were very friendly.
The hotel is directly opposite from the train station (such an impressive building) but it is not noisy or crowded.
There is a free bus into Chester which is approximately every 10 minutes, alternatively you can walk into the town which takes roughly 10-15 minutes.
We went out for a meal on the first night and jumped into a taxi. We asked the driver to recommend a good steak house. He took us to 'The Grill Upstairs' pricey but worth every penny - a definite return is on the cards there!!!
All in all, the hotel, staff, amenities and food is fantastic - well worth every penny and we will certainly use again on our return.

This Hotel is in a superb location within Chester, just opposite the train station. There is a car park which is secure but not big enough for the hotel when busy, the cost is £10 for 24hrs, the alternative being the train parking which although is secure is further away and over double the price.

The hotel itself comprises the older front with the recently developed Kings suites at the rear which used to be a bank office block. The whole hotel has had a flamboyant makeover which mixes Greek, roman and Egyptian themes with old Victorian comfort, the whole thing falls on the good side of kitsch - just!

The older part of the hotel comprises the reception area with sweeping staircase, lounges with open fires and leather seating and the bars, interconnecting the old and new is the restaurant and function suites, the new part of the hotel comprises a grill restaurant and a cocktail bar and is again very plushly decorated. The open areas form a courtyard with large fountains, mythical beasts and faux roman and Greek follies.

The rooms in the Kings area follow themes of ancient emperors, and kings from all over on each floor.

I have stayed in standard and suite accommodation and the quality and finishes in either room is excellent.

On this occasion we stayed in the Claudius Suite which as you would expect follows the Roman theme and styling queues although the mod cons of 3 plamsma TV's (one in the bathroom) and an iPod dock are very much 21st century. The decor is opulent golds and heavy fabrics with theatrical dining table and chairs, four poster bed with mazes of bolster pillows, scatter cushions and of course the ever present Feathers Bear (although Best Western the Hotel is owned by the Feathers Group and they have their own bear!).

On the down side when getting into the room the bath had not been cleaned and there was a full bin in there also, a quick word to housekeeping and the issue was resolved. When starting I have heard a few complaints regarding the overall cleanliness of the rooms in the older part but this is anedotal.

The room door arm was broken and sometimes did not allow the door to be opened - this was reported but in a weekend stay I did not expect this to be resolved.

The food quality is very much above the level for this kind of hotel, breakfast is Buffett style but good quality.

Room service menu is quite small but again food quality is good, arrived within 20 mins and was hot.

There is an excessive tray charge of £5 per tray which is above the norm in my opinion and added to the expected high cost of room service dining.

Staff very pleasant and attentive.

On the whole it is well worth a visit - ask for Kings Rooms when booking and you will not be disappointed.

Hotel in good location near the train station & bus from train station into centre if not able to walk. When checking in asked to book eve meal for that night and was told we should have done it when we made booking. Only a B & B rate available???? Therefore never ate an evening meal once in the hotel! Food sounded nice but very pricy.
Not very impressed that we had to pay £10 a day to park in hotel when we were residents. Never been to a hotel where we've had to do that before and we've travelled all over the world.
Our room was in the old part of the hotel and was a bit shabby with paint peeling off the walls. The heater in the bathroom didn't work and it was very cold. Had to ask twice for someone to look at it and no-one ever did. My husband feels the cold so it wasn't very nice for him.
Breakfast was a help yourself, even the cooked breakfast, which I thought at a 4 star hotel should have been served to you and not left out for you to dish up yourself on a cold plate so it went cold very quickly. The service was poor and no-one ever came and asked if you wanted another hot drink and you could never catch anyone to ask them. It also took a while for table to be cleared.
I have never left a bad review for a hotel before and disappointed that I'm having to do so for this 4 star hotel, which if they tidied the rooms a bit, and gave a better breakfast service, and the reception staff was a bit friendlier then this would have been a better stay. Not what I expect of a 4 star hotel and I would not stay here again! All show.

Stayed at this hotel to celebrate my 50th birthday. My husband booked on the hotels own website and asked for a suite in the queens part of the hotel.(the Kings suites look fabulous and modern but we prefer the old fashioned atmosphere of the queens). We had stayed many years ago in a double room which although fairly small was perfectly adequate but as a special treat he upgraded to a queen suite. Upon arrival a lovely young lady on reception advised we had been upgraded to the lily langtry suite. They did not know it was a special birthday so a lovely suprise.Wow what a wonderful room or should i say rooms.Beautiful clean room with extra large bed supporting a lovely teddy bear which can be bought from reception.White and black bathroom with corner bath and separate shower. Double sink and lots of space for toiletries. Then came the suprise. What we thought was a connecting door to the next room turned out to be the door through to our lounge.Fabulous large room decorated with antique furniture and paintings. Large sofa and chairs.Beautiful mirrors and a lovely fireplace. Both rooms have large windows onto the balcony overlooking the courtyard. After unpacking(loads of drawer and wardrobe space) we went for a drink in the waiting room bar.Every member of staff we met from then on could not have been more friendly or helpful. The barman advised us that it was busy due to an offer on which meant bed and breakfast guests got free drinks. Loved the atmosphere. We did not bother to upgrade to breakfast as we rarely eat breakfast but would be good value for those that do.
Although we love eating out and had researched lots of super restuarants in Chester it was a very rainy windy night so we ate that night in the hotels grill restaurant. They have a lovely cocktail bar next to the restaurant so we looked at the menu with some g &t's close to hand.Fabulous menu so very hard to choose. I opted for the salmon in the end and my husband had fillet steak (one of the best he had tasted).Although not a cheap meal it was so good we decided to book for the next night too and the meal was equally good followed by one too many cocktails (so many to choose from) Again the waiting and bar staff were the friendliest we had come accross and we stay at hotels on a regular basis.
Overall it was one the best weekends away we have had in a long time. We know how lucky we were to be upgraded but can honestly say because of the staff at this hotel we would have loved the stay no matter what room we had. Have stayed at many 5 star hotels and had the stay ruined by rude surly unfriendly staff. This was fabulous and anybody thinking of booking do so now.

we stayed here on the fifty friday offer and prior to going i rang the hotel to check we were eligible to the free bar 5-7pm and i was told if we were BandB then yes so i planned our evening around that . On arrival at the bar we were told we were not entitled to it and had to pay £20 to upgrade (very disapointed). Our room was average/basic and desperately needed fresh decor and had i paid more than £50 i would have been very disapointed. Come on Best Western people enjoy promotions but dont like being let down on arrival, give them nice rooms and free bars theyll come back then! and tell friends !!!
