Macdonald New Blossoms Hotel
Ranked #26 of 45 Hotels in Chester
Reviewed 28 June 2011

To start on a very positive note my partner and I have stayed at numerous McDonald hotels and have never had cause to complain, to the contrary, we love the chain and continue to use them (Bath Spa booked for next year already!) but found the New Blossom to be truly awful. It was the third McDonald we stayed in on this particular trip having already enjoyed the Roxburgh (Edinburgh) and Gisborough Hall (Yorks) so the bar was very high as both were excellent. The New Blossom is located in the centre of Chester very conveniently located for the shops, bars, eating places and sight seeing venues but is quite tricky to locate due to one way systems and the pedestrian area. Problems strat upon arrival as you cannot park outside the hotel (double yellow lines) and have to struggle with luggae while dodging traffic and parking wardens; this being the case the hotel should provide a conceirge service to help guests upon arrival. The hotel is very busy and does not have the normal 'cut above' feel we have come to expect from McDonalds (a large 'hen party' booked in when we did!), overall the premises are tired, grubby and in need of a refurbishment. The staff, although generally helpful, seemed very young, inexperienced and too busy to provide an individual service. Our room was ok but was at the front of the hotel overlooking the pedestrian precinct - we did not get any sleep on our first night due to the incredibly loud noise of rowdy crowds outside enjoying the nightlife; silence finally fell around 4 am! We complained the following day and were moved to a much quieter 'inside' room with views of fire escapes and drainage systems, but at least we got some sleep that night. Breakfast was chaos, very very busy and disorganised - empty tables were few and far between and uncleared whcih meant lengthy waits each morning. The breakfast itself was ok but served in a dining room that looked more like a bar by staff in uniforms that were absolutely filthy dirty and far too busy to deliver an acceptable standard of service; more down at heel motorway servcie station than up market hotel. The staff were friendly though and did try to help when they could; although skimmed milk was not available for my partner?! We complained to a very helpful duty manager who took herself of to a local supermarket to purchase te milk we needed!? We had a great time in Chester, truly a very beautiful city but, despite the best efforts of some staff, our stay at the New Blossom was a huge disappointment as it fell well short of the standards we have come to expect and enjoy from McDonalds Hotels. So awful was our experience that the same helpful Duty Manager waived the parking fee.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms overlooking the pedestian area!

This hotel has definitely gone down hill over the last few years. We’ve stayed there before – but never again! There was no tea and coffee out when we arrived (found them in the wardrobe) The room was small and shabby (thought we’d been put in the servant’s quarters) and you couldn’t fully open the door to the bathroom because the bed was in the way. The windows looked like they hadn’t been cleaned since the place was built, and the stay was broken.

The bathroom was small and windowless. The “shower” was a fine mist that took about 5 minutes to get you wet, and 10 to wash off the soap. The shower screen was jammed up against the sink so the bath taps couldn’t be turned on without getting into the bath.

BBC1 and 2 didn’t work on the television, and the phone wouldn’t connect to reception (wise!)

The first night (Monday) there was so much noise in the street from drunks until 4am that we missed breakfast catching up on sleep. The next nights were better – noise stopped about 2 am.

Parking arrangements are a nightmare.

This hotel has been refurbished – they should get their money back and you shouldn’t waste yours by booking a room here!

We stayed here for one night. It was to be the start of a short holiday in Wales and we'd booked a nice restaurant in the hope of winding down a little before we got to our destination. The receptionist was faultless and the booking in procedure fluent. Our room was a little shabby in places and in need of some TLC but it was clean and we thought, 'what the hell, it's only one night'. The shower was an exercise in contortionism just to get wet - no power and very little heat, almost like being drizzled on. We went out for our meal, had a drink in the great pub next door and retired to bed. Unfortunately for us, the nightclub down the road was doing a roaring trade until 4am even on a Monday (either that or that just had very noisy patrons) and even three floors up the shouting and screaming from there became outrageous. We had noticed the travelodge on the same road and when we had been slightly disappointed with our room we wondered if we should have booked in there. Just as well we didn't as that was immediately over the road from said nightclub. We had to close the windows and slide across the secondary double glazing just to blot it all out and then the room became unbearably stuffy. All in all, apart from the excellent staff, not a relaxing night at all.

My complaints about this hotel are more to do with its infrastructure than the service. There is no doubt that the location is perfect and the staff well trained. However, this is not a 4* hotel.
The room was so stifflingly hot ( and it was not that hot outside) we barely slept for 2 nights. The safety stops on the windows prevented them opening more than a few inches and the opening we got was blocked by the window boxes outside, preventing any sort of breeze entering the room. The room was on the main street, and we were distrubed until about 3 O'clock in the morning by people coming and going to the nightclubs 100 yrds down the road.
TV channels are limited, basic terrestial plus a coiple of others. Not even freeview.
The only bar is in the restaraunt, the "bar" having been converted to a cooffee lounge. The bar closes with the restaraunt. This means when we returned to the hotel after our meal out, around 10.30 pm there was no where to get a drink, as there was no mini bar in the room.
My partner ordered flowers and champagne for our arrival. The flowers had almost died from the heat and the ice for the champagne melted. The hotel could not provide a vase, although they did go out and buy one the following day. They provided the flowers, surely they should have realised we would need a vase for a 2 night stay.
I could go on, but suffice it to say , other than my opening comments, i really can't find anything to recommend this hotel. I have travelled extensively on business and this is the worst place I have ever stayed, and that includes the budget chains. At least they aren't trying to pretend they are something they're not.

Room Tip: Ask for one off the main street

We have just stayed for three nights in the New Blossom Hotel in Chester, we thoroughly enjoyed out stay, the room, breakfast and staff were all excellent. We would recommend this hotel to anyone wishing a central location. Will definitely use this hotel again if we go back to Chester and will ask for the same room.

I booked this hotel as a surprise weekend away for my husband. The location was perfect, tucked away just off the main street. Our room was clean and spacious; we had a suite which wasn't much more money than a standard room and well worth the extra cost. Also it was extremely quiet, a real bonus in a city centre hotel on a Saturday night! The downside was that there was absolutely no view from any window.
The only criticism I have is that they couldn't provide a non feather pillow (they'd given them all out) and the evening meal, in the steak and grill style restaurant wasn't up to the usual MacDonald's standard I've experienced before. However breakfast was perfect! I'd eat out in the evening next time. Also there is no parking, it was recommended we use a NCP 2 minutes away, for which there was an extra cost.
A lovely well appointed hotel, with good service. Would certainly stay there again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room off the main street.

After booking the hotel we read one or two negative reviews about the hotel. All I can say is that the staff in this hotel are amongst the friendliest and helpfull I have ever come across. Right from the initial greeting at reception. Even the breakfast staff (including chef) had a cheery smile and welcome / goodbye. The food was excellent and the room was absolutely fine. My wife did find the room a little war but the hotel provide both a floor standing fn and a desk fan.

Ignore the soothsayers - this Hotel is great!
