“Mixed feelings !!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 June 2014

Tried MD's on a Friday night with the Gourmet Card offer of 2-4-1 on 3courses. Thank goodness for that as would not have been happy with full price!
Service was good with friendly staff.
Starter of smoked haddock fish cake was small, tasteless and mostly mashed potato. Main of chicken with bacon and cheese with barbecue sauce , chips and salad was fine and filling. However I don't know how they have the cheek to sell the Strawberry Dream for £5:50 ... Just bland strawberry and vanilla ice cream with sauce and cream and NOT a single strawberry to be found! even tho the menu described it as " topped with fresh strawberries" ! I could only DREAM of them!! The owner agreed to change it and offered fruit salad which consisted of a fan of melon and a few slices of orange....not exactly a treat on which to end a meal.
Disappointing !!!

“Amazing steak!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 May 2014 via mobile

Walked in off the street on a Wednesday night after seeing the 2-1 offer. We were met with a smile and served with drinks quickly. We both had rump steak which was the best we have had out in a while. The steak came with chips, mushrooms, tomatoes and a good side salad and we ordered a peppercorn and diane sauce which came in a jug on the side. The portion size and quality of the food was excellent and with a beer and glass of wine the total bill came to £22!! We will definitely return.

“Staff very friendly but food average and over priced”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 March 2014

My wife and I walked in of the street on a Friday night unbooked and found the restaurant only half full
Although you couldn't fault the staff serving you as they were very friendly and attentive I do wonder if the chef out the back was as keen because the food was average and for what it was, the prices seemed high.
Overall restaurant ambience and staff good, suggest maybe change the chef?

“Dinner for Four”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 February 2014

We were visiting our daughter at Chester university myself, husband and mother in law, having been to Md's before, and having a lovely meal, we booked in advance (as this was back in December) on arriving in the restaurant at 7.30pm - we were mortified to find we were the only four people in the restaurant - after about 10 minutes another couple joined us and that was the total amount of people for the evening!!!! The food again was good and we enjoyed our meal - will we visit again NO - last time we went we were fortunate enough not to have to use the toilets - this time however we did - and had to go up 2 flights of stairs and then walk through an empty restaurant to the back of the building - even our 18 year old daughter complained of the distance - your food is cold by the time you get back!!! my mother in law need to use the toilet and I said ask to use the disabled toilets as its a long trek and she has a bad leg - there are no ground floor toilets so anyone having to use the toilets have no choice - this ruined our evening to be honest I understand that this is a listed building - but to have toilets so far away is ludicrous and does not cater for all, by day its Katies Café and again I have used the café - but I wont again - as the toilet situation is ridiculous - they need to address this as on a busy Friday evening in December - I am not surprised locals don't go there good food poor poor facilities and to not cater for the infirm shame on them. Avoild this restaurant unless you know you will not need to use the toilet.

“DO try this restaurant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 December 2013 via mobile

Cant understand bad revs unless we got a good night.
Bruschetta to share delicious, very tasty, loaded with fresh tomato pieces, herbs, a little olive oil and garlic. Have eaten hundreds of these and this was one of the better ones. Good value too.
My main was pan fried chicken, baby onions and very nice fresh sauce clearly done in the pan.
Chicken nice and crispy on base which makes it perhaps firmer, but thats how it should be in my opinion when pan fried.
My partner had the pork in apple and cider, also very nicely cooked.
Veg fine, fresh firm boiled potatoes and carrot rings plus al dente broc.
Service very friendly and attentive
Booked for a Fri with a tastecard, no quibbles and accepted with a smile.
Perhaps this restaurant doesnt help itself because its set a little low from the outside pavement but it is fine inside, especially the window seat
Finally, yes its a bit of a hike to the loo, but it is a 500 year old plus medieval building with 3 tea rooms, not premier inn.
To summarise, nice meal well prepared, nice staff and on our experience, no hesitation to recommend, especially with tastecard or on Weds 2 for 1
